Hope for elderly suffering from blindness
Ludhiana, November 7 According to Dr G.S. Dhami, the PDT is done for the treatment of a specific eye condition called age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). He said it affects about 10 per cent of the elderly people above the age of 50. In this disease, the central portion of retina is affected leading to distortion and loss of fine vision. The cause of severe visual loss in the ARMD is the formation of abnormal blood vessels in retina. He stated that in the PDT, a photosensitive dye called verteporfin (Visudyne) is injected intravenously for a particular time during which it gets concentrated in abnormal retinal vessels and is then activated by a specific type of non-thermal laser, leading to the closure of these vessels thus preventing the progression of the disease. He said the PDT procedure takes less than half an hour. The only precaution to be taken by the patient is to avoid sunlight for three days. The warning symptoms of this disease are distortion or loss of central vision, contrast, colour sensitivity, size of objects in people above 50 years and should be urgently examined by retina specialist. |
