PU grounds parched; sportsmen risk injuries Chandigarh, November 5 This startling fact came to light after a visit by this correspondent to the campus and after talking to various sportspersons practising there. With no water, the grounds, which having facilities for cricket, football, hockey and handball, bear a barren look. Thanks to the lackadaisical attitude of the Department of Sports, which has been embroiled in infighting for some time, the ground has lost its turf and sportsmen are exposing themselves to injury by being forced to play on the grounds deprived of green grass. Sources said officers of the PU have been blatantly ignoring the responsibility by putting the onus on the Panjab University Sports Council (PUSC), an elected body among affiliated colleges of the university, for the maintenance of the grounds. A sports teacher at one of the local affiliated college questioned the provision of money to the PU from the PUSC fund, while its more than 100 colleges were being deprived of it to upkeep their sports infrastructure. Thousands of students studying in Panjab University and its affiliated colleges located as far away as Ferozepore, Hoshiarpur and Ludhiana come to take part in PU inter-college sports activities. Recently, during the All-India Inter-Varsity Handball Meet and in the Inter-College Hockey Meet, the problem was raised by the participants, but to no avail. PU grounds are the largest in Chandigarh, much bigger than those of Sports Complex, Sector 7, and Sports Complex, Sector 46. A sportsman on the condition of anonymity said: “How can the PU be serious about sports when it has not had a full-time Director of Sports for several years.” He asked: “If the PU can provide PUSC funds for the construction of a new sports hostel, why cannot it make arrangements to water its grounds?” He said sportsmen were bound to suffer injuries if they used grounds unfit for them. The sources said the main tubewell that met water requirements of the university grounds had not been working for the past four years. Instead, drinking water was being diverted to water the grounds. When the fact was brought to the knowledge of the Public Health Department of Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, they responded by cutting off the water supply, they added. Interestingly, the only water that these grounds have had in the past three months has been through rains. At present, the inter-college and inter-varsity sports season is at its peak and the PU has to finish its activities in the current sports calendar by December 31. Unless sincere efforts are made in these two months, sports and sportsmen in Panjab University are bound to suffer. |
