Employer-specific courses in schools on the cards

Chandigarh, November 4
To bridge the gap between the job market and vocational education in government schools, the UT Education Department will go to the employers to find out their requirements.

The employer-specific training will be incorporated in the school curriculum so that the acceptability of school passouts increased in the market. Based on a survey of the market, the proposed changes in the curriculum will be forwarded to the CBSE.

Once the board approved the changes, the courses will become part of vocational subject. Sources in the Education Department said the vocational course had gained acceptance among students coming from the lower and middle sections of the society.

The department was keen on running specialised courses for stock keeping assistants, who were in high demand from construction contractors and transporters, said a senior officer.

A project to arm the children of the lower strata, aged between 6 and 14 years, with business acumen while studying at schools, had boosted the morale of planners. Introduced at Government Girls High School, Sector 25, students were being trained in vocational skills while studying at school.

The UT Education Department has earlier come out with a vision document for its passouts in 21 different vocational courses, run in the local government schools. The document, prepared in the form of a booklet, guides the students on the various employment prospects for higher studies after vocational courses at the senior secondary level.

To give maximum exposure to students, training in school workshops was being given. Training in hospitals and the hotel industry was given for courses like ophthalmic techniques, medical laboratory techniques, hotel management and catering.
