Proper diet can check blindness in diabetics

Regular check up of eyes coupled with appropriate diet can go a long way in minimising the chances of blindness in case of the patients suffering from diabetes.

Emphasising the importance of the regular eye check for diabetic patients, Dr Michiel McQuinn from the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, United Kingdom talked about the mandatory “screening programmes” that have been introduced in his hospital in the UK. Under the programme the eyes of the diabetic patients are regularly checked through photography, in which the minutes developments of the eyes are observed.

“In India, the number of the diabetic persons is large as the data says that 5 to 7 per cent of the huge population here is affected by the disease,” says the doctor who delivered a talk at GMCH, Sector 32, here today.

The symptoms of the eye defects in diabetics could be the blurring of the vision or appearance of floater before the eyes. The doctor says that the loss of vision in diabetes could be treated by laser, which may work only in some cases.

Hindi Samaroh held at PGI

In order to give a boost to the national language Hindi — the Postgraduate Institute, (PGI) organised a “Hindi Samaroh-2004” here today. The Head of Department of Hindi, Panjab University, Prof Dharam Pal Maini, was the chief guest, while the Director, PGI, Prof K.K. Talwar, presided over.

Professor Maini said that by using the national language everyday, the PGI doctors should be able to serve the masses better. He said that with the use of Hindi language, the patients could express their feelings and fears easily and clearly.

Professor Talwar released poetry books written in Hindi by PGI staff members. Book s tilted “Sab Kuchh Keh Lene Do,” written by Ms Suman Sharma, “Pyasa Manjar” by Ms Kiran and “Arsh Mushafir” written by Dr Gaurav Sanghi were released.

Cash prizes were given to 12 staff members for doing their work originally in Hindi in 2003-2004.

On the occasion, prizes were also given to the winners of various competitions, including Hindi handwriting competition, precis and paragraph writing competition, Noting and drafting, memoirs writing, Hindi typing, Hindi knowledge, essay writing, story writing, translation, dictation, on the spot debate, speech and poem recitation competitions.

PEC students donate blood

More than 460 students of Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh, today donated blood at a camp organised jointly by the State Bank of India, PEC branch and NSS unit of the college.

Among the donors were 100 girls. All donors were presented with a pen set, certificate and refreshments.

The camp was conducted by a team of doctors from the PGI.

36 local kids for horse riding show

It is the thrill of a galloping horse that attracts children to equestrian sports. For them, reigning in a magnificent beast seem to give them a feeling of invincibility and exhilaration which perhaps no other sport may offer.

“I like the speed at which a horse can gallop. It is thrilling,” said 10-year-old Rajat Ghirra, who took to riding about six months ago after seeing horses gallop during a show. “Siting astride a galloping horse makes me feel proud,” Apurv Gupta, also 10, added. “It is a handsome and a royal animal,” he added. He now wants a horse as his birthday present.

Both the kids, members of the Chandigarh Horse Riders Society, are among the youngest riders taking part in the Chandigarh Horse Show-2004, which began here today. The society, which is sending 36 children in the show, is also fielding the youngest tent pegging team.

A special feature of the horse show this year is the participation of riding teams from different schools in the region. “We have 13 teams participating this year,” Maj Ajay Ahlawat, executive secretary of Western Command’s Shivalik Riding and Pony Club (SRPC), which is organising the show, said.

Among the schools participating are Punjab Public School, Nabha, which is perhaps the only school in Punjab to have its own stables, Yadvindra Public School, Mohali, Mango Grove School, Panchkula and several schools from Dehradun.

The youngest riders at the show, Ruchir Kumar and Arjun, are just 6-years-old. They are both studying at the Mango Grove School, Panchkula, and are also associated with the SRPC. The oldest rider to participate in the show is the 65-year old Principal of Wellham School, Dehardun, Mr Dev Lahri.

This year is also witnessing a record participation of women riders, with over 70 entries in all age groups having been received for various competitions. Among the known names is 28-year old Jyotika Hassanwalia who has represented India in several International events. In fact, the first championship she ever participated in was held at Chandigarh.

The Army has been preparing for the event for several weeks, the Railway Territorial Army ground adjoining Kalagram has been levelled and fresh grass planted in barren areas. Different arenas and obstacle courses have been set up and tracks are being repeatedly watered. A separate camping area has been earmarked for participants and their horses.

National School Games’ trials

The selection trials for the 50th National School Games will be organised by the Education Department, UT Administration, from 8 to 10 November at various centres and schools in the city to select the Chandigarh school team. The dates for the National School Games will be announced later.

The trials will be held in basketball, yoga, kho-kho, table tennis and volleyball in under-14,17 and 19 age groups. The venues are: basketball — IS Dev Samaj School, Sector 21, GGMSSS-18 and GGMSSS-33; yoga — GMSSS-37; kho-kho — GMGSSS-18, GMSSS-23 and SGGSSS-35; table tennis — TT, Sector 33; and volleyball — GMHS-26, GSSS-27, GMHS-26 and GSSS-27.

Cricket

St Anne’s Convent School, Sector 32, outplayed St Kabir School, Sector 26, by three wickets to sail into the last four of the Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament played here today in Sector 26.

Brief scores: St Kabir: 104 runs for five (Navi Bansal 21, Abhey 29, Karandeep 31); St Anne’s: 106 runs for seven in 24.3 overs (Pushpasar 33, Vivan 31, Kanav 4 for 18).

Floodlit courts

Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, will have floodlit volleyball courts from tomorrow. The formal opening ceremony of these newly installed floodlights will be done tomorrow at 5.30 pm.

The school is also playing host to the International Sunil Memorial Volleyball Tournament from November 5 to 7.

Referees

Vishnu Kumar Sharma and Sukhjeevan Sharma have been appointed referees by the Taekwondo Federation of India for the 20th Female Junior and Sub-Junior, 22nd Male Junior and First Muye National Taekwondo Championships to be held in New Delhi from November 4 to 6.

Minerva, Coaching Centre in soccer final

Minerva Academy and Coaching Center, Sector 17, will face each other in the finals of the First Lt.Col IS Deol Memorial six-a-side-league Soccer Tournament played here at Sector 17 Football Stadium. Both earned maximum number of points to qualify for the final. The tournament is being organised as part of the Minerva Academy Sports Festival.

In the league matches held today, Minerva Academy defeated Sanjay Football Club by three goals to one. In another tie, Young Football Club trounced Golden Football Club by seven goals to one. Sheshnath scored three and Ankit Malik scored two goals for the winners. AG, Haryana conceded all its matches today by failing to turn up. In another tie, Golden Football Club thashed Coaching Center, Sector 17, by seven goals to nil. Gurpratap Singh scored two goals for the winners. Tomorrow the finals will be played at 3:30 pm followed by a prize distribution ceremony.

St Stephen’s school win football match

Soccer eves of St Stephen’s School, Sector 45 here clinched the UT Inter School Girls Football Tournament for the sixth consecutive year. In the finals, they defeated Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26 in the tie-breaker with scores being 2-1. Manmeet and Shikha scored one goal each for the winners.

Shivalik Public School, Sector 41 and St Stephen’s School, Sector 45 ‘A’ team surged ahead by beating Bhavan Vidyalya, Sector 27 by six wickets and 10 wickets respectively in the Molly Carver Memorial Sports Carnival held today. In the hockey matches held today, GMSSS, Sector 35 ‘B’ team, GMSSS-35 ‘A’ team and St Stephen’s also won their respective matches.

Rana Gurmit Sodhi is IOA Joint Secretary

Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, President of the Chandigarh Olympic Association was elected Joint Secretary of the Indian Olympic Association on November 1.

He is an international shooter and played important role in the allotment of the 2010 Commonwealth Games to New Delhi.

He is also working Chairman of Indo-Pak Games, to be held in Punjab in December this year.
