Course for civil servants

Ludhiana, November 2
The PAU VC, Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh, has said administrators can play an important role in the rural development of Punjab. He was speaking to newly selected IAS and PCS officers of the Punjab cadre attending a three-day training course at PAU here today.

The VC said agricultural development contributed to rural development and PAU was doing this job through research in the field of agriculture. He said the present administration made a great service towards humanity but it was based on neat and clean thinking. It was to the credit of PAU that of these newly selected officers, Capt Karnail Singh and Jagwinderjit Singh Grewal were its former students.

Dr Varinder Kumar Bhambota and Dr Rupinder Kaur Toor, coordinators of the course, said besides four IAS officers of the Punjab cadre — Kamal Kishore Yadav, Rajat Aggarwal, V. K. Sharma and Dharamjit Singh Grewal, 11 PCS officers — Jagwinderjit Singh Grewal, Subhash Chander, Upkar Singh, Rahul Singh, Sandeep Rishi, Rajesh Tripathi, Daljit Kaur, Capt Karnail Singh, Dr Neeru Katyal, Rajiv Kumar Gupta and Parminderpal Singh were attending the course.

DPS holds Dharohar

Ludhiana, November 2
A function, Dharohar, was organised at Delhi Public School, Ludhiana, as a mark of veneration to grandparents today. The function began with the lighting of a lamp by Mr Sanjiv Kumar, Pro-Vice-Chairman, DPS, Ludhiana. Guests, which included Mr Vivek Ramchandani, Director, Education, Takshila Educational Society, parents, grandparents and other luminaries of the town, were accorded a warm welcome by the Principal, Mrs Seema Malik.

The programme started with a splendid kathak performance by young dancers as a tribute to Lord Vishnu. Contemporary problems of the youth were brought forth in a light vein by students in an item called “Aisa kabhi hota nahin”. In “dandia raas”, the performers looked resplendent in their ethnic finery. Tiny tots performed aerobics to the tune of resounding music.

“My name is Madhavi” depicted people from various states of India. On a sombre note, the pollution of the Ganga was shown in a stupendous performance by senior students.

Seminar on spoken English

Ludhiana, November 2
The Legends English Village, an institute for spoken English in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, UK, conducted a seminar at Sanatan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School here today. Students were given tips in spoken English. Students from classes VIII to XII attended the seminar.

The seminar stressed on the importance of English in the overall development of personality.

Education camp concludes: A three-day state-level education camp organised by the Punjab Rural Education Promotion Council, Ludhiana, was held at Baba Isher Singh Public School from October 30 to November 1. A science exhibition was inaugurated by Mr Avinash Chander Sethi, DEO, Ludhiana during the camp.

Students visited laboratories of Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, Gurukul and R.S. Model Senior Secondary School.

On October 30, ‘Honhar Bachche’, a book, was released by Dr Manohar Singh Gill, a former Chief Election Commissioner, who is also the chief patron of this council. Twenty-two students who had stood first in various activities were awarded Rs 1,000 each. Mr Amarjeet Singh Samra, a former Revenue Minister, announced a grant of Rs 51,000, Mr Nahar Singh Gill, Mayor, announced a grant of Rs 11,000 while Mrs Aneeta Kundra, Principal, donated Rs 11,000 to the council.

Dr R.P.S. Boparai, Dr S.S. Pawar, Mr Ranjit Singh (national awardees) and Mrs Kundra honoured students who excelled in various competitions held at the district level. The national awardee teachers of the state were also honoured.

The chief guest, Mr Charanjit Singh, Deputy Speaker, Lok Sabha, and Mr Amrik Singh Sandhu, Director, Extension Taxation, awarded prizes to students who excelled in cultural programmes.

Divinity quiz: In the chain of events forming part of the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev, a divinity quiz was organised at Guru Gobind Singh Public School here today. Nearly 150 students participated in the quiz.

They were categorised into four houses named after Baba Banda Singh Bhadur, Bhagat Puran Singh, Bhai Mati Dass and Bhai Veer Singh. Bhagat Puran Singh House stood first in the quiz whereas Bhai Veer Singh House was second.

Sarabjit Cheema honoured

Sarabjit Cheema Ludhiana, November 2
It was a thrilling day for students of Guru Nanak Girls’ College as Punjabi singer and actor was amid them this afternoon. The students had arranged a cultural extravaganza to honour Sarabjit Cheema and his team for the film “Pind Di Kudi.”

Sarabjit was accompanied by the director of the film, Iqbal Singh Dhilon. The other unit members of the film — Tania Tandon, BN Sharma, Mota Singh, Jagtar Singh and Ravinder Ranguwal — also accompanied him.

Sarabjit said he got the offer to act in the film over a half year ago . He liked the story and hence he consented. He said it was the first Punjabi film in which Pakistani actors were acting. He said,” The movie promotes friendship between the two nations”. He has sung a few songs while others have been sung by Sukhminder, Jaspinder Nirula, Sardul Sikander and Richa Sharma.

He said the movie would be released on November 26 in Punjab and later would be released overseas.

BVM players excel

Students of the local Bharatiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Udham Singh Nagar, clinched 31 medals, including 18 gold in athletics, besides romping home champions in judo in the 17th North Zone Sports Meet organised by Vidya Bharti at Karan Stadium, Karnal, recently.

According to Mr Baljeet Singh Gill, sports in charge of the BVM School, participants from Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir competed.

The medal winners are:

Athletics: boys (u-11) 100m — Udhay Sharma I; 400m — Prabhat II.

Girls (u-14) 600m and 400m — Ganga Gautam I and II.

Boys (u-17): 800m — Amandeep Singh II; girls (u-17 years): 200m — Kirti Sharma I; 400m and 800 — Manisha Verma II and I; boys (u-19 years) — Maneet Sharma first in 200m, 400m and 800m and was adjudged the best athlete in this age group.

Boys (u-19 years) — 100m — Parmod I, 1,500m — Dalpreet I and 5,000m — Deepak Gautam II; 5 km cross-country race — BVM school I; 4x400m relay — BVM school I; girls (u-19 years) — Priya Bawa bagged three titles ( 800m, 1500m and 3 km cross-country race) and was named the best athlete, 100m — Manisha Gupta III; 200m — Rupali Arora I; 5000m — Sakshi I; long jump — Isha III; 4x100m relay — BVM School I; 4x400m relay — BVM School I and 3km cross-country race — BVM School I.

The judokas (girls) of the BVM School won the overall trophy. Manjit Kaur, Nidhi Arora, Meenu Arora and Parul Khanna bagged three gold and one bronze for their school.
