Actors against nudity in videos
A.S. Prashar
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 25
Does sex sell? Not necessarily, if you ask the star cast of the new movie "Kiss Kis Ko" based on the life and times of the wellknown musical group, "A Band of Boys". In town to promote their maiden movie, the actors, Bhoomika Puri, Aparna Kumar, Raj Zutshi and Aly Khan are critical of the widespread phenomenon in the movies and music videos featuring semi-clad women dancing to the beat of loud and not always melodious music.

"There is hardly a movie or a musical video produced these days which does not purvey sex in a bid to enhance their mass appeal", they said.

"We feel that to some extent, the audience should also share the blame for increasing nudity and sensuality in movies and videos because the viewers do not seem to be objecting to it.

On the other hand, they appear to be liking them, as reflected in the phenomenon sales such videos are record.

This is spurring producers to make more and more such programmes. But this phenonemonon cannot last. It is a bubble waiting to burst," they exclaim.

Interestingly, their strong views against sexuality and nudity in movies and music videos has not prevented them from using a rather suggestive title "Kiss Kis Ko" for their movie which purportedly potrays the struggle of an all-male musical band which is shooed off by producers because it does not feature any sexy girl.

Produced by band promotor Manu Kumaran (Bombay Boys) and Ram Punjabi, the film is scheduled to be released on October 29. The movie juxtaposes the struggle of the band to make a mark against the romantic misadventures of the boys.

They find that life is a bit of struggle, what with the music companies hitching themselves to the "sex sells" band wagon.

But there is hope till the heroine enters the life of each one of them. "Pals before gals", the motto of the boys, is put to severe test as they find themselves hopeless involved with the heroine who seems to have been just made for them.

Bhoomika Puri plays the heroine who wreaks havoc with the boys’ lives. She carries on an affair with each one of them, leaving them to wonder whom will she kiss finally."

Written by Pankaj Kapoor and directed by Sharad Sharan the film has eight songs composed by "A Band of Boys" and Vikesh Mehta. Shot entirely in Bali and Jakarta, Indonesia, the film has been shot by cameraman Santosh Thundiyil of "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" fame.

For Shernaz scripts are utmost
Swarleen kaur

Shernaz Patel, Vijay Crishna
Shernaz Patel, Vijay Crishna

An attempt to dissolve cultural barriers will be made when “Molly Sweeney”, directed by Rehaan Engineer , will be staged at Tagore Theatre, Sector 18, here on Tuesday. The story revolves around three characters — Molly Sweeney (Shernaz Patel ) Frank (Rehaan Engineer) and Dr Paddy Rice (Vijay Crishna). Each one lives in their own world spinned by the web of the mind. Molly sweeney, the central character of the play, is a blind woman who leads a contended and fulfilling life despite her disability. She gets a chance to get her sight restored partially. The play is all about how she copes with different situations.

Two shows of this play have already been staged in Mumbai.

Shernaz Patel of “Love Letters” fame got the best compliment when a blind woman came to her and said,” You have understood us”. ‘I think it was an achievement for me, she says.

She has done around 25 plays in English and has no plans to do Hindi plays.

The damsel, whose birthday falls on October 27, has not thought about the way to celebrate it.

“I guess that I will be on the road to Delhi that day”, she said

Getting back to theatre life she shared few witty experiences. “You become very sensitive while doing theatre. While portraying other characters sometimes you get in touch with your darker side” .

You will get a chance to see her in Leela Bansali’s movie “ Black” in which she plays the role of the mother of the lead actress.

How was it like playing the role of a mother at such a young age?

“I really enjoyed working with Leela Bansali. In the movie I become a mother at a young age so there is full scope to live the character.

For her the deciding factor of the play is scripts. It is very important for me.

The best thing about her that she has a constant desire to improve herself and hungry to learn something new. But she doesn’t open up easily and is an introvert by nature.

Shernaz doesn’t likes make up. Glamour is the last word for her. What is more important is that you have to be beautiful from inside.

Talking about television she said I hate watching “saas bahu” kind of serials. These kind of serials have suppressed the real image of woman. I think it is enough and we should come out of it.

Ask her about obscenity of skin in movies and you get a terse answer. “I don’t think it is bad. The person who is displaying the skin might be very natural. But the problem lies in the attitude of the viewer”.

She strongly believes that women are far stronger then men and more beautiful .

“If women would rule the world then at least there will be no wars”, she quipped. Though this claim can be disputed but one agrees with her that a woman handles a situation with more sensitivity than a man.

Vijay Crishna, who played father of Shahrukh Khan in “Devdas” does not hanker for the celluloid.

“I really don’t have time to act in movies but I don’t have regrets as my two companies are doing well. Because of lack of time he had to pull out from :”Lakshya” and “Black”. You have to make choices because there are some commitments with the family also.

His love for the theatre can be gauged from his priorities.

“English plays reach limited segment but definitely leave an impact”, he said.

He has done couple of movies and many TV serials. Though he has tried his hands at directing plays but enjoys acting more.

A lot of things are involved in doing plays. You have to do a lot of home work. Giving an example of a historical play he said,” We had to show some expensive weapons of an era. But I made it in my factory. The play was based on Bernard Shaw’s “Saint John”.

His reverence for the prodigal, Mahesh Dattni, is seen to be believed.

The language of the theatre is universal. When put on the stage it can reflect any culture and any situation. Time flies on wings of imagination, he adds.

According to Nadir Khan, director of the play, English theatre is really growing, especially in Mumbai. A lot of young people are coming to watch it which is a good sign.

Most of the shooting have been done and it will be in theatres in India and abroad by the end of November. There is also plan to shoot few scenes in Gujranwala in Pakistan”.

Shibha Pakhdi who is playing the character of modern woman in the movie said,” I am playing a ‘Shahar ki kudi’ in it and I enjoyed a lot while shooting for this movie as there is a lot of comedy in it.
