Old couple found murdered in house
Jagraon, October 24
Mohinder Singh (60) an ex-serviceman and his wife Balwinderjit Kaur (55) were today found murdered in their residence at Malsihan Bhaike village 10 km from here in mysterious circumstances.

Betrayed, she contemplates immolation

She dressed up as a bride for four times to tie nuptial knot with a man of her dreams. Every time her would-be husband postponed the event at the last minute citing one excuse or the other. Now the “dejected” girl, who was deserted by her parents for bringing “bad name to family” has threatened self-immolation outside Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi, if her fiancee did not accept her as his wife.

SAD (A) wants Badal summoned at Takht

The SAD (A) has urged Akal Takhat to summon President of the SAD (B) and former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for allegedly using derogatory words for the sacred and religious symbol of Sikhs Khanda which was presented to him on behalf of the Sikhs of England during a function at Mehma Singh Wala village in Kilaraipur constituency segment on Saturday.

Applications invited to upgrade museums

Deputy Commissioner Anurag Verma has invited applications for financial assistance for strengthening regional and local museums. He said the objective was to modernise museums up to 80 per cent of the total project cost might be provided as assistance by the government.

VC of “fake” university booked

The police today booked the Vice-Chancellor of the alleged fake Rajiv Gandhi University, New Delhi, on the complaint of the local Director of a technical education institution who had charged the VC of playing a fraud with him and his students by not recognising the courses despite taking the requisite fee.

Partap Singh Kalsi Former PAU Don gets ICS Award

Dr Partap Singh Kalsi, a former Head of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, PAU, has been selected for the Prof S.C. Ameta Award instituted by the Indian Chemical Society, Kolkata for 2003 for his outstanding contribution to chemistry over the past four decades.

Arjun Singh visits city

The Union Human Resource Development Minister, Mr Arjun Singh, visited the city today and interacted with industrialists, politicians, bureaucrats and educationists and assessed the ground realities in the state that would help him while dealing with issues concerning the state.

Congress ‘misused’ official machinery in by-elections
Ludhiana, October 24
The misuse of official machinery and brow-beating by the Congress were responsible for the defeat of the SAD-BJP alliance in Kapurthala and Garhshanker by-elections, says state BJP chief and MP Avinash Rai Khanna.

Lions clubs’ members pledge to improve society
Ludhiana, October 24
At the joint installation ceremony of 12 Lions Clubs held at Lions Bhavan, Ludhiana, last night 800 Lion members gathered from all over Punjab. The function was presided over by Mr Jaswant Garg, District Governor. He explained the role played by Lions Clubs in the elimination of treatable blindness Polio eradication programme.

Pak Sufi singers perform in city
Ludhiana, October 24

Two Pakistani Sufi singers Iqbal Bahoo and Saiyan Zahoor, presented Sufi kalam in Guru Nanak Bhawan here last night. They had brought the message of love from Pakistan through a cultural exchange programme ‘Sanhj’ that is simultaneously going on in Amritsar. After giving their performance in Amritsar, the two singers presented some soul-stirring music here.

Exhibition of Dhawan’s paintings
Ludhiana, October 24
Sanjay Dhawan’s 27 paintings displayed at his exhibition in the TAC Gallery, Raj Guru Nagar, is Spectrum. The title is apt as his works are not limited to a particular theme, subject, style or medium. The exhibition started today and would continue till October 29.

Milk producers organise medical camp
Ludhiana, October 24
The Ludhiana District Cooperative Milk Producers Federation organised a medical camp at Hassanpur village here today where a team of doctors from the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital examined 400 patients.

Free diagnostic camp for piles
Doraha, October 24
A free diagnostic camp for piles was organised at Sidhu Hospital from October 19 to 23, in which a Mumbai-based surgeon, Dr Roy Patankar, conducted the surgeries through stapler technology.

Gurm wins golf tournament

More than two dozen golfers took part in the Ludhiana leg of the third McDowell’s Signature Intra-Club Golf Championship held at Ranjitgarh Golf Course of Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, near here, today. The first leg of the tournament was held in Jaipur on October 16.
