Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, October 13
The VIII Annual Conference of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (Zonal Chapter North) will be organised at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital here on October 16 and October 17 under the aegis of Department of Community Medicine.

Public health and preventive medicine physicians from Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and UT Chandigarh are likely to participate in addition to the senior doctors and students form DMCH and CMCH.

Dr G.P.I. Singh, President of the association and organising secretary of the conference, said that the theme of the conference is Environmental Challenges to Human Health in the new millennium. The concept has appropriately been chosen for the deliberations, as due to the insensitive management and ham-handed disrespect to the environment by human activity, the “nature has finally began to strike back”. This has virtually pitted green revolution and industrial revolution against human health. He added that it is the appropriate time to take stock and endeavour to find solutions.

The speakers are from diverse fields including doctors, Pollution Control Board, agriculture scientists and NGOs working in this field. The second day is devoted to three scientific sessions wherein 20 scientific papers will be presented.

Our Correspondent

Goyal, said the district authorities had coordinated the two departments as part of the sensitisation programme and had held seminars in the district. “As technical knowledge lies with medical professionals and teachers can reach the youngsters more easily, both departments are complementary to each other when it came to dispersing knowledge,” he said.

Resource persons were imparted extensive knowledge about the symptoms, causes and methods of prevention of AIDS.
