Man jumps to death in District Courts
Chandigarh, October 11
A man in judicial custody jumped to death from the fourth floor of the District Courts Complex here today after he was refused permission to attend the cremation of his wife for whose dowry death he and his mother were arrested yesterday.

Rain cools haves, chills have-nots

Moderate to heavy rainfall in the city and the adjoining areas today seems to have brought an early onset of the winter. Normal life was thrown out of gear this evening with heavy rainfall forcing the residents to remain indoors. A 15-member delegation of Pakistan Rangers arrived here today for the biannual conference with their counterparts from the Border Security Force (BSF) on matters pertaining to management of the international border between the two countries and other issues of mutual interest.

Pak seeks Punjab expertise to boost agriculture
Chandigarh, October 11
Struck by the success story of Punjab agriculture, Pakistan has made up its mind to sign Indian experts in the lead role. Pakistan’s Minister for Agriculture and Marketing Rana Mohammed Kasim Nau today revealed that they had decided to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Punjab Mandi Board here for the transfer of expertise in the filed of marketing and agriculture research.

Harbans Singh cremated
Chandigarh, October 11
Former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Harbans Singh, who died yesterday evening after a brief illness, was cremated here today. He was 90. Justice Harbans Singh had also remained Chief Commissioner of Sikh Gurdwara Election Commission.

CM mourns death

The Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, today mourned the death of Justice Harbans Singh (retd), who passed away here on Sunday. He was former Chief Commissioner, Sikh Gurdwara Election Commission.

Nine hurt in Sumo-truck collision
Lalru, October 11
Nine occupants of a Tata Sumo including two women were injured, three of them seriously, when their vehicle had a head-on collision with the truck on the busy Kalka-Ambala highway in Dappar village near here, this morning.

Minor girl abducted
Chandigarh, October 11
The local police registered a case of abduction of a minor girl of Manimajra. According to the police, father of the girl Sushil Kumar of Pipliwala town in Manimajra reported that Ravi Kumar, resident of Sector 26, allegedly abducted his daughter on October 9. The girl had gone to a computer centre when she was abducted.

Chain snatched
Mohali, October 11
In a daring incident of robbery, a gold chain was snatched from a woman, resident of Sector 71, here this evening. The incident occurred when Mrs Geeta Malik was returning home from an STD around 4 p.m., when a scooter-borne person snatched her chain and fled.

Two injured
Chandigarh, October 11
A scooterist, Sushma Chauhan, of Sector 15-D was hit by a Maruti Van driven by Navjot of Phase 7, Mohali, near Sector 24-25 chowk. Her two sons — Rahul and Lalit — got injured in the accident and were admitted to the PGI.

BSNL GM held on graft charge
Chandigarh, October 11
The Patiala BSNL General Manager, Mr C.S. Kataria, was caught by a team of the CBI while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000. He has been arrested. The CBI, in a statement said, the bribe was allegedly demanded for granting him a tender for collecting outstanding telephone dues.

1 booked under Periphery Act
Chandigarh, October 11
The local police booked a person under the Periphery Control Act today. Mr S.K. Setia, Land Acquisition Officer had given a written complaint to the Senior Superintendent of police, Mr Gaurav Yadav, that the Nazar Singh of Hallomajra village sold small plots without any permission.

The Punjab and Sind Bank, Patiala Zone, has initiated action against habitual defaulters. It has taken over the possession of the properties of M/s Chandan Pan Products Ltd on October 4 under the SRFAESI Act, 2002, said an official statement.

The Panjab university Non-Teaching Employees Federation held a rally at the administrative block, panjab University, here today, to protest against the indifferent attitude of the authorities towards clearing appointments to be made on compassionate grounds.

Bail plea rejected
Panchkula, October 11
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr J.R. Chauhan, today rejected the bail application of two Health Department officials accused of embezzlement. The accused — Pramod Kumar, cashier, and Rajiv Kumar, clerk — had moved the court after they were booked by the police under Section 409 of the IPC last week.

Convention of medical technologists held
