Parallel state transport office busted
Ludhiana, September 30
The city police has busted one of the biggest scandals of fake registration copies and route permits of vehicles by arresting two persons and recovering 90 filled and unfilled RCs, 88 fake stamps of almost all District Transport Officers in the state and a large number of forged driving licences.

DC cautions against outbreak of dengue 
Ludhiana, September 30
Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, has directed the departments concerned, including Health, Municipal Corporation and Local Bodies, to take strict preventive measures against the spread of dengue in the coming days and to create awareness and educate the people to clean all the potential places for the breeding of mosquitoes i.e. stagnated water in the open places, coolers, and pots, etc.

Special drive to make photo identity cards
Ludhiana, September 30
A drive of photography will be carried out from October 1 to October 28 to provide the photo identity cards (PIC) to the voters who could not get their cards prepared so far. The drive covers all the 12 assembly constituencies of the district.

Undertrial escapes from custody
Ludhiana, September 30
An undertrial prisoner in a case of theft Mohinder Singh, a resident of Giljewal village under the jurisdiction of Kot Bhai police station in Muktsar, gave the slip to the police from outside the main gate of the central jail on the Tajpur Road last night.

Start schemes for weaker sections, demands Cong SC wing
Ludhiana, September 30
A state-level meeting of the SC wing of the Congress was held here today. District chairpersons participated in the meeting and discussed the problems and economic condition of the Scheduled castes in the state. The issue of injustice to the Scheduled Castes within the government and the party also figured in the deliberations.

Crucial issues unlikely to be taken up at MC meeting

Even as the ruling Congress in the Municipal Corporation here has been literally forced into holding a meeting of the general house tomorrow under pressure by councillors of both the main opposition parties and the Congress, most of the crucial civic issues would still fail to be deliberated upon if the agenda issued for the meeting is any indication.

Sharda Ram Phillauri’s birth anniversary celebrated

Gugga Mari mela at Tibba
Sahnewal, September 30
A two-day Gugga Mari Mela was held at Tibba village, near Sahnewal. Residents of Tibba village along with the surrounding villages gathered in large number to celebrate the fair as it holds great religious significance for them. Mr Balwinder Singh Jhajj, sarpanch of the village organised the show.

The dharna organised by all patwaris of Ludhiana, East and West, today entered its fourth day. A protest was staged in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

One killed in factory blast 
Mandi Gobindgarh, September 30
The body of a factory worker, who was killed in a blast that took place in a factory here yesterday was cremated today after a post-mortem examination in the Civil Hospital.

SBI launches loan processing cell
Ludhiana, September 30
State Bank of India today rolled out its Business Process Re-engineering Project (BPR) at Ludhiana by launching a central processing cell ‘Small Enterprises Credit Cell’ to process loan proposals of small enterprises having turnover up to Rs 1 crore.

 

EDUCATION

Candidates allege ‘harassment’ during counselling 
Mandi Ahmedgarh, September 30
The Department of Medical Education and Science, Government of Punjab, has not received any complaints in connection with the counselling being organised by the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences for admission to BAMS classes under management quota, claimed departmental sources. The candidates from other states, however, alleged harassment on the hands of the authorities during the counselling.

B. Tech Project State Award for PAU student
Ludhiana, September 30
Promil Kumar Mehra, a student of the Department of Farm Power and Machinery, PAU, has been selected for the best B. Tech Project State Award in mechanical engineering and allied branches in Punjab.

Guru Harkishan Public School wins science quiz
Ludhiana, September 30
On the second day of a regional-level science exhibition competitions in model making were held. Students prepared models on topics like agriculture, industrial development, educational technology, mathematical modelling, technology for health and solid waste and its management etc.

Khanna school wins shabad gayan contest
Ludhiana, September 30
The cultural and dance competitions at primary, middle and senior levels, which were organised by the Punjab School Education Board, concluded here today. About 200 students from four districts, Sangrur, Ludhiana, Patiala and Mansa, participated in the competitions.

NSS camp at Khalsa College
Ludhiana, September 30
A 10-day NSS camp is being organised at Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, under the guidance of programme officers Gurdeep Kaur, Prabhleen Toor and Honey Walia. About 147 volunteers are attending the camp. It was inaugurated by the NSS co-ordinator, Dr K.S. Verma, PAU, on September 26.

Punjab sub-junior badminton begins today
Ludhiana, September 30
Raj Kumar of Ludhiana and Komalpreet of Jalandhar have been top seeded in the boys and girls’ sections, resepectively, in the four-day Punjab State sub-junior Badminton Championship which begins at the Shastri Hall of Guru Nanak Stadium tomorrow.

Misappropriation of funds alleged

A group of former players has joined the issue of mis-appropriation of funds by office-bearers of the Ludhiana District Badminton Association (LDBA).
