DMC strike called off

The Hero DMC Heart Institute will start functioning again tomorrow following the employees’ decision to withdraw their strike today.

A 75-year-old woman was found clubbed to death at her house in Preet Nagar in the Shimlapuri area of the city this morning.

Another veiled statue of martyr

Following indifferent attitude of the government agencies, an NRI widow along with her close relatives has erected a statue of her husband, who had laid down his life during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war. While the statue was erected in April this year, it would be kept covered till the November end, when a Colonel of the National Ducker Horse regiment would unveil it. The covered statue is attracting public attention. Another statue of a martyr had earlier remained covered at Latala village in the Kilaraipur constituency segment for months together.

Mother of two commits suicide
Ludhiana, September 19
Suffering from an illness, a 32-year-old mother of two committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan in her house in New Puneet Nagar, Basti Jodhewal, today.

Kashmiri youth march reaches city
Ludhiana, September 19
Eighteen displaced Kashmiri Pandits, who are on a march from Jammu to the Parliament House in New Delhi, reached Ludhiana today. They were accorded a warm welcome by the small Kashmiri Pandit community and some local people here.

Ex-services league lauds Akal Takht edict
Ludhiana, September 19
The Indian Ex-Services League, Punjab and Chandigarh, has welcomed the edict of Akal Takht refusing the Sikh community's support to the RSS. In a signed statement, the president of the league, Lt-Col Chanan Singh Dhillon has said that the RSS was indulging in activities that undermined the Sikh philosophy and it also refused to recognise Sikhism as a separate religion.

Smuggler held, opium seized

The Dehlon police has arrested a member of an interstate gang involved in smuggling drugs and narcotics and seized 2.72 kg opium from his possession.

Koshish-2004 concludes
Ludhiana, September 19
Koshish-2004, the fifth inter-class literary-cum-cultural festival, concluded at the Punjab College of Technical Education yesterday. The festival started on September 11. Students of MBA final year (Section B) won the overall trophy, by winning 11 first prizes, four second prizes and one third prize.

Strikes galore in colleges

The new academic term started in colleges here in August with strikes. Reasons ranged from trivial to serious. The first major strike was in Government College for Boys. The students were enraged as the news spread that a teacher had slapped a student.

City powerlifter brings laurels

Ludhiana, September 19
Local powerlifter Pawandeep Singh has brought laurels to the nation by finishing runner-up in the World Sub-Junior Powerlifting Championship held in Pretoria, South Africa, from September 8 to 12. Pawandeep Singh was felicitated by the Worldwide Health Club at a function held here today. Accompanied by his coach Baljit Singh Bobby, Pawandeep informed that in the 75-kg category, he, with an attempt of total 530 kg, bagged the second position. He lifted 140 kg in bench press, 195 kg in the squat, while 195 kg in the dead lift to secure the silver medal.
