Strikes galore in colleges
Asha Ahuja

Ludhiana, September 19
The new academic term started in colleges here in August with strikes. Reasons ranged from trivial to serious.

The first major strike was in Government College for Boys. The students were enraged as the news spread that a teacher had slapped a student. The students insisted for an apology from the teacher. A compromise was reached after a couple of days .This was followed by a strike by SDP College students on a smilar reason.

In September ,the veterinary college students went on a strike . They are on strike for the 10 days .They are demanding that the government fills 600 vacancies of veterinary doctors. But, the Animal Husbandry Minister, has turned down the demand on the plea that the State doesn’t have funds.

When the students of Veterinary college were on strike, the girl hostlers in PAUfollowed suit. They demanded functional toilets, proper wardrobes and common room furniture and a Dean Student Welfare to look after their genuine needs. The girls withdrew strike following an assurance from the college authorities.

This was followed by a strike in Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College. Here also a student was mistreated by a teacher. The irate students burnt the effigy of the principal and the teacher, blocked the traffic on Gill Road, met Akali bigwigs like Vedanti and Akhlinder Singh , president of SGPC. The students sought the support of girl students.

The Principal did not want the teacher to be fired , the students would not have anything short of that. The students won .The teacher was forced to resign . The victory has fed the appetite of the students. They are demanding the scalp of the principal for supporting the teacher.

This was followed by a short strike by students of Khalsa College for Women . They made an issue when a girl hosteler went missing . Speculation was rife that the girl was murdered. The strike fizzled out when the parents claimed that the girl had gone to her relatives.
