7 militants killed in valley

At least seven militants were killed in separate incidents in the Kashmir valley since yesterday, while security forces recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition during search operations.

Two militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Zaloora, Sopore, in Baramula district yesterday, the police said.

They were identified as Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yaqoob Qadiri, both from Pakistan.

Two AK rifles, four magazines, a pistol, a magazine, two pouches, eight grenades and a UBGL with its four grenades were recovered from the site of the encounter.

Two militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Aham-e-Sharief, Bandipore, in Baramula district today. The operation was in progress till reports last came in.

A militant, Fayaz Ahmad of Kokernag area was killed in an encounter with the security forces in nearby Qazigund area of Anantnag district yesterday. A pistol, a magazine and a wireless set were recovered from the site of the encounter.

A militant was killed in an encounter at Lalpora in Kupwara district yesterday. An AK rifle, three magazines, 70 rounds and two grenades were recovered from the site.

A militant, identified as Nazir Ahmad Shah, was killed in an encounter with the security forces at Sahwari in Kupwara district today.

JAMMU (PTI): Two civilians were killed and an equal number kidnapped by militants in Rajouri and Udhampur districts of Jammu and Kashmir since Friday night, official sources said here on Saturday.

A group of armed militants barged into the house of Irshad Ahmed at Doodaj village of Darhal tehsil in Rajouri district on Friday night and killed him by slitting his throat, the sources said.

After committing the crime, the same group of militants went to another house, where they shot dead Mohammad Farooq, an employee of the Public Health Engineering Department.

The militants later escaped under the cover of darkness, the sources said, adding that a police team had rushed to the village.

Reports from Udhampur district said militants kidnapped two youths, Nissar Ahmed and Tariq Ahmed, from Bhimdasa and Jamian villages, respectively.

Meanwhile, a delayed report said three youths who were kidnapped by militants on the intervening night of September 4 and 5 from Chilli village of Udhampur district and Gandoh village of Doda district, escaped from militant captivity on September 15.

They reached Gool area of Udhampur district, where they have reported to the police, the sources said.

PDP hails Centre’s decision on POTA

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has hailed the Union Cabinet decision of approving the ordinance to repeal the controversial POTA and setting a time frame for reviewing cases under the law.

In his statement, Mr Basharat Bukhari, chief spokesman and president of the PDP youth wing, alleged that the previous National Conference (NC) government had implemented the ordinance, while it was yet to be implemented by other states.

One arrested for espionage

The police here today claimed to have arrested Sahil Mohammad Maqbool Khokhar, working with a local newspaper, on the charges of espionage.

A police spokesman said Sahil admitted his involvement in passing on sensitive defence-related information to Pakistan. A case under the Official Secrets Act and RPC had been registered.

The spokesman said a search conducted on Maqbool’s disclosure yielded classified and sensitive material relating to defence establishments from his residence here.
