Hope for accident victims
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 13
Ambulances continuously taking the rounds of the city to track down any serious accident case which needs medical attention, their drivers well-versed with the basics of the trauma management and handling of the patients and a critically ill patient landing in the emergency ward within five minutes of an accident.

Depicting the ideal picture of what a Trauma Centre should be , the expert from Denmark, Dr Annemarie shared the experience of setting up the 1200-bed biggest trauma centre at Copenhagen in 1999 and rendered tips on how to make such a centre work effectively for people.

The first step, she revealed, was closing the doors of emergency ward of the hospital for any other patients but maintaining the exclusivity for seriously injured patients requiring immediate care.

“We closed the hospital’s emergency unit and catered only to seriously injured patients when we set up the trauma centre in 1999. As a result, though there are five hospitals in the city today, we are getting more than 700 cases of seriously injured patients every year,’’ said Dr Annemarie who delivered a special lecture at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, here today.

But merely making this infrastructural modification was not adequate. The real step lay in the training of manpower deployed at every step of the managing a trauma case, which also included the training of the ambulance drivers in handling and taking care of the patients while on their way to the Trauma Centre. ``We are following the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ALTS) system, which is a systematic learning process. Everyone in paramedicine, including the drivers are well versed with the golden A-B-C-D-E rule. It simply means that the stepwise checking of the patient’s Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability and Exposure starts the moment the ambulance reaches him,’’ explained the doctor. The emphasis is on starting the treatment right from the spot of the accident, rather than waiting for the patient to reach the hospital, unlike the general practice in most of the Indian hospitals.
