Protest over girl’s molestation

Srinagar, September 11
A teenaged girl was molested allegedly by a CRPF jawan in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir triggering protest today by the locals prompting the police to use force in which seven persons were injured.

The 19-year-old was allegedly molested in lower Munda yesterday evening, an official report reaching here said.

Demanding action against the jawan, residents of several villages in the Qazigund area of the district took to streets and blocked the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway at Qazigund, 80 km from here, the report said.

The villagers alleged that the CRPF jawan barged into the temporary shelter of a nomad at Gulab Bagh and tried to outrage the modesty of his daughter, according to the report.

The family members of the girl resisted the jawans who allegedly beat them up with gun-butts and also tried to drag the girl to a nearby isolated place, the report said adding that the girl, however, managed her escape and was subsequently rescued by local police.

In a bid to pacify the protesters, the police asked them to disperse with an assurance that the incident would be looked into and those involved would be brought to book. But the protesters turned violent and resorted to stone-pelting forcing the police to use batons and teargas shells during which seven persons were injured, the report said.

As the lathicharge and teargassing proved ineffective, the reports said the police fired several warning shots and brought the situation under control, it said. — PTI

The special judge, Mr B.L. Bhat, rejected the bail application after hearing his counsel and the lawyer of the Vigilance organisation. The court examined the record pertaining to the case before rejected the bail application.
