Heart disease control
project in city soon
Chandigarh, September 11 The project, under which doctors of any specialisation would be trained to counsel for heart diseases, is funded by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and expected to start soon in city hospitals. “The PGI will provide technical training in the project as the experts here will train some 200 odd doctors working in the UT Administration and private medical practitioners with the help of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The idea is to reach the maximum number of people through counselling given by specialised medical practitioners,’’ says the Head of Department of the Community Medicine, PGI, Prof Rajesh Kumar. The PGI Director, Prof K.K. Talwar, a cardiologist himself, says that the project will be in public interest and would go a long way in creating awareness among the city residents about heart diseases. The WHO has chosen Chandigarh for this two-year pilot project primarily because of the city’s sedentary lifestyle and junk food culture where the physical activity is reducing and hypertension, obesity and incidents of heart attacks are on the rise. After rounds of meetings between the PGI representatives and officials of the UT Health Department, it has been decided that all doctors of any specialisation will be given basic treatment guidelines to seek a
"behavioural change’’ among the patients, with respect to their status of smoking, eating habits and physical activity. The doctors will be imparted training to provide counselling for ``healthy lifestyle and early specialised medical
consultation’’ in case they find any patient prone to cardiovascular diseases. “If a patient, for instance, approaches an orthopaedician with an injury, he will be given treatment immediately for his problem but at the same time he will be asked by the same doctor about his lifestyle and habits. In case the doctor feels that along with the orthopaedic disorder, the patient is prone to cardiovascular diseases, he will be referred to a cardio clinic,’’ explains Prof Rajesh Kumar about the role of the doctors under the project. Along with the counselling sessions, for which, a series of workshops are being planned out, the project will also comprise of disseminating the awareness messages through mass media, community-based NGOs, government health workers and other paramedical staff. Given the better socio-economic status but a sedate lifestyle, Chandigarh has been the preferred destination for the initiation of the project, which if successful here would be replicated in other centres as well. Experts in the PGI admit that the studies have shown that as many as 40 per cent of the city population above 35 years of age is already affected with hypertension and that as many as 8 per cent people in the same age bracket have suffered heart attacks. |
