J & K Power Minister resigns Srinagar, June 20 The resignation was sent to the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, yesterday after the district authorities allegedly refused to stop the Cantonment Board from dumping the waste in the land belonging to local people in the Chadoora constituency from where Mir was elected to the Assembly, official sources said. However, Mr Sayeed has not yet accepted the resignation and efforts are on to persuade Mr Mir to continue in the Cabinet. Sources said Mr Mir, regarded as an honest and hard working minister in the PDP-Congress government, lodged a protest after the government transferred the land near Rakhishalina, Lasjan to the Cantonment Board without getting his consent. The local residents also took to the streets and held protest demonstrations against the government decision as truckloads of garbage are dumped there, resulting in the outbreak of diseases in the area. The demonstrators alleged that several cows and other animals had died after they ate some garbage. Sources said the police and civil administration in Badgam district had refused to stop the Cantonment Board from dumping garbage there following directions from the top. Mr Mir, who could not be contacted, had told a group of local newspersons yesterday that top officials of the board, the Deputy Commissioner, Budgam, and some Army officers had assembled near the place and were supervising the dumping operation despite the fact that an FIR had been lodged at the police station concerned against the board. The residents of the area and adjacent villages including Golpora, Sonarbugh and Tengam have objected to the place being used as a dumping ground.

EU stand on J-K welcomed Jammu, June 20 In a statement here yesterday, Dr Nirmal Singh, president of the state unit of the party, hailed his declaration that the EU would not interfere in the internal affairs of India and described his stand as a step in the right direction. Dr Nirmal Singh hoped that other world powers would also adopt a realistic approach on the issues facing the people of the state and not back the ongoing Pakistan-sponsored separatist movement. He said the Kashmiri separatists had already caused immense loss to the life and property and disturbed the religio-political equilibrium. He said the separatists did not represent the general will. A majority of the people of Jammu and Ladakh had nothing to do with the sectarian and violent movement. The state BJP chief urged the Centre to involve all sections of society in the dialogue process and abandon the idea that the Hurriyat Conference factions were the sole factor in the political situation. |

Another project near Poonch town supplies electricity to two hamlets through electric cables laid by the Army. The hill Kaka mountains, once the hub of militants, today have a mini-hydel project constructed by the Army with the help of local youth. Barsada and Kolale villages will receive electricity through this project soon, he added. The Army has commenced work on eight pilot projects, of which three are in Rajouri and five in the Kashmir valley, Brigadier Bakshi said. He added that a Dehradun-based NGO was helping the troops. Dr Anil Joshi of the Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation has designed inexpensive and environment-friendly kits for upgrading the water mills into micro-hydel projects, which can light up villages, grind corn and run lathes.
