Hygiene key to check water-borne diseases
Tribune News Service

Cholera cases began to come up in city hospitals in early May, when five persons were confirmed of being cholera positive at the GMCH Sector 32 here. Sources at the hospital said the report regarding the confirmation of five cholera cases was sent to the Director Health Services, Dr C.P. Bansal.

Three more such cases from Colony No 5 were reported at the hospital recently. However, one of these was later confirmed to be negative.

Personal hygiene, safe drinking water and avoiding cut-fruits are the keys to check the outbreak of cholera and diarrhoea, suggest city doctors. Cholera cases have recently started surfacing in slum areas and colonies.

Generally, the symptoms of water-borne diseases — diarrhoea and cholera — are vomiting, stomachache and dysentery, which the doctors say are the result of consuming infected items. Drinking water should be chlorinated or it should be boiled before consuming.

Though a large number of people depend on handpumps for getting drinking water in various colonies of the city, medical experts advocate for a complete ban on their use for drinking purposes. The contamination levels in water drawn from shallow handpumps is quite high, they argue. “The best option would be to use chlorinated water. People must curb the habit of consuming water from any source, especially in summers,” said an official of the Health Department. He takes rounds of these colonies to create awareness among the people about various diseases.

Fruits kept over a period of time, cut-fruits bought from roadside vendors, over-ripe vegetables, sugarcane juice and ice-cream candies fall in the category of edibles that need to be avoided in the season, he maintains.

“Defecating in the open and unhygienic practices among residents are other major reasons behind increased infection in slums,” remarked a senior doctor posted at a government hospital.
