Power cos’ losses on paper: BJP New Delhi, June 12 Questioning the figures released by the companies insofar as losses are concerned, the Delhi Pradesh BJP President, Mr Harshvardhan, said their accounting procedures were “fishy”. Mr Harshvardhan told a news conference that an agency like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should investigate the matter. He claimed that the government was hand in glove with the companies. He also claimed that the power companies had earned a profit of more than Rs 1,200 crore but were showing losses on paper allegedly to make more money from the people. The BJP, he said, has decided to observe June 13 to 20 as ‘protest week’ to oppose the hike in power tariffs and would take out a march to the chief minister’s residence next week. He told reporters after an emergency meeting of the party that demonstrations would also be held outside all the electricity offices. He felt there was more to the hike than was apparent. He said the distribution companies were earning a profit and there was no need to increase electricity charges. The truth, he claimed, could be known after a high-level inquiry. Harshvardhan said the companies had put their current losses at Rs 4,527 crore but after a settlement, they agreed at Rs 1,762 crore. He reiterated that a probe would bring out the truth. He claimed the private companies were making a profit but were making a hue and cry about the losses. This, he said, was unfair to the people who have been burdened by the hike. He also alleged that the companies were earning additional money by slapping on consumers inflated bills shown by fast running meters. The quality of the supply, he added, was not satisfactory.

He also demanded that the increase in house tax should not exceed 50 per cent. |
Two die in Tughlakabad encounter New Delhi, June 12 According to the police, both the criminals — Yaseen and his associate, Benami Singh — residents of Aligarh, were wanted in several criminal cases in states like Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. While Yaseen had been involved in 47 cases of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, dacoity and assault on police, Benami had 30 cases registered against him. Yaseen had been sentenced to life imprisonment in Madhya Pradesh, but had escaped twice from the prison. Acting on a tip-off on June 11, the sleuths had nabbed two associates of Yaseen, Munna alias Munesh, a resident of Bulandshahar, and Mohammad Sahil, a resident of Gautambudh Nagar, near Haldiram Sweets on Mathura Road. The sleuths are also looking for Yaseen’s another associate, Arnam, who is at large. During interrogation, the duo revealed that Yaseen and Benami had been staying in Faridabad. When the sleuths raided a hideout in the city, they found that Yaseen and Benami had gone to Delhi and would be returning to the hideout any time, the Additional Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Mr Karnal Singh, said. Accordingly, a special team was constituted and deployed on the Delhi-Faridabad highway. At around 11.15 pm last night, the sleuths spotted an Alto car coming from Govindpuri side, and when intercepted near Karni Singh shooting range, the assailants started firing at the sleuths. The assailants were shot dead when the sleuths returned the fire. Mr Singh said that Yaseen had escaped thrice from police custody and also killed a businessman in the Connaught Place area on March 30, 1997, in a case of mistaken identity. However, he had been nabbed two days later from a hotel in Daryaganj area. In 1995, Yaseen and Benami committed a dacoity-cum-murder in a petrol pump in Aligarh, where he killed the owner and decamped with Rs 1.5 lakh. Again, in 1995, the duo and their associates committed a robbery of Rs 1.10 lakh in a petrol pump in Bhopal. |
DMA calls for rationalising consumer Act provisions New Delhi, June 12 The DMA asserted that frivolous and vexatious complaints against doctors under the CPA were having a demoralising effect on them, and demanded that expert advice be taken to decide cases against them, besides laying down ‘definite provisions’ and guidelines to the satisfaction of all parties. “We believe in ‘patient priority and total transparency’ in the inter-relationship between doctors and patients, which is based on sacred mutuality. Doctors exist for patients and no development would be allowed to embitter this sacred relationship,” said DMA president I P Dhalla at the inaugural function of the DMA’s 47th annual conference. He called for the early passage of the ‘Anti-Quackery Bill’ and repealing of the provision of doctors being booked under Section 304 (culpable homicide). While the quackery menace harmed the credit and reputation of medical professionals no end, the said provision ‘’demoralised’’ the practitioners to the point of no return. He also stressed on the association’s ‘passionate professionalism’ through which it endeavours to ‘revive the faith’ of the people in those involved in this profession. ‘‘For this, the DMA’s theme for this year would be `Doctor-Patient Relationship: Service With Dignity.’ The two-day conference was inaugurated by Rajya Sabha member R. K. Anand. |
HC clarifies position on rewards to informants New Delhi, June 12 A Division Bench, comprising Justice B. C. Patel and Justice B. D. Ahmed, said that it is the duty of the authority concerned to pay according to the reward policy of the government. It is not necessary that the amount must be recovered in cash from a party against whom the information was given. The judges were dealing with a case where information given by a petitioner led to recovery of a huge consignment of articles for which a company was attempting to evade custom duty. However, the petitioner was only given a part amount of the reward due to him from the department on the ground that the full and final amount only be given after actual realisation of dues from the erring company, even though he said dues had been adjusted against certain other “refunds” that were to be made to the company. The informant moved the HC for directions to release the entire reward along with interest. The court ruled that the benefit was required to be given to the person concerned, saying it had been admitted by the DRI that the information conveyed by the petitioner led to the recovery. Yet, the department wanted that the court should not interfere as the amount had not been realised in cash from the party concerned. Hence, they were not liable to make any payment. The bench has directed the department to make the payment of the final reward amount in terms of the policy within 15 days with interest to the petitioner. |
