A club committed to encourage volleyball
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, May 23
More than six years ago, a few apple orchardists of Jubbal village in Himachal Pradesh formed a club — Wills Sports — to encourage volleyball in the region. The tournanment organised by the club was of the status of north zone only till last year. But this year the club has taken the decision to further expand the tournament to the national level.

The club is organising a tournament in which top volleyball teams of the country, including Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation, ONGC, Dehra Dun, Norhern Railways, Delhi, Shivalik Volleyball Academy, Chandigarh, AG, HP, will vie for top honours. Mr Manoj Chauhan, president of the club, said there were at present 108 members of the club and everyone was serving the club on a voluntary basis.

Mr Chauhan said residents of Jubbal village with a population of nearly 40000, had enormous interest for sports. He said when they saw children playing cricket without proper infrastructure, they convinced them to join volleyball which would give them the right kind of exposure.

Mr Chauhan said they had invited the Shivalik Volleyball Academy players to attend a camp at Jubbal beginning first week of June till the start of the meet on June 10.

The academy players for the camp will include the boys who won Junior National Volleyball title as member of the UT team last year. Three players — Raju Chauhan, Balwant Singh and Balwant Tanta — also hail from Jubbal who play at the national level and are now part of the academy, he said.

Mr Chauhan who was accompanied by members of his club said volleyball was otherwise state game of Himachal Pradesh. The state had produced a number of spikers of the national level.
