Youths vandalise pub, attack proprietor
Chandigarh, May 17
A group of youths last night assaulted the proprietor of Mercury Restaurant and Pub in Sector 46 and vandalised the premises. About 15 youths, armed with hockey sticks, hit the proprietor, Mr Yogesh Sharma, and his brother, Mr Naveen Sharma, on the head.

Mohali, May 17
An NRI was killed and a Chandigarh-based couple along with two other women were injured when their car rammed into a truck on the Kharar-Kurali road, near Burmajra village, late tonight.

Child’s body found
Chandigarh, May 17
The decomposed body of a four-year-old boy was found in a nullah in Makhan Majra today. The body seemed to be around three or four days old. The face of the child had been bitten by some animals, according to the police. The child wore a red T-shirt. There were no injury marks on the body.

General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, Lt- Gen J.J Singh, today said that a tie-up with a few more major private hospitals in Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali was on the cards.

Move to boycott Sonia’s swearing-in criticised

A former city Mayor and local Congress leaders today criticised the decision of the BJP-led NDA to boycott the swearing-in of Ms Sonia Gandhi as Prime Minister. According to them, the action of the NDA and the BJP in particular was against all norms of democracy and against the spirit and provisions of the Indian Constitution.

The parking contractor of the Dev Samaj College for Girls, Sector 45, has been booked for allegedly illegally charging annual parking fee from around 200 students and not depositing it with the college.

Servant escapes with Rs 50,000
Chandigarh, May 17
A 16-year-old domestic help of a Sector 18-based cloth merchant allegedly stole Rs 50,000 from the latter’s house yesterday. The servant, Vinod Kumar from Bihar, had been serving Mr Naveen Chhabra for the past two years and had access to the keys of Mr Chhabra.

8 Mohali students in Class VIII merit list
Mohali, May 17
Three students of Paragon Senior Secondary School, Phase X, and five students of Gem Public School, Phase 3BII, have made it to the Punjab School Education Board merit list of the Class VIII examination. While Jasmandeep of Paragon School is first in Mohali and second in Ropar district, Akhil Tewari of the same school is second in Mohali and sixth in the district. Parminder Singh of Gem Public School is third in Mohali and seventh in the district.

Dental lab complex opened at Chandi Mandir

With a view to providing better facilities to troops, mobile dental vans will be made available to dental formations across the country within an year. Pulse polio drive on May 23

Over 71,000 children up to five years of age will be administered polio drops during the sub-national pulse polio programme to be held on May 23.
According to official sources, 317 booths — 299 fixed ones, five transit teams and 13 mobile team — will be pressed into service.

Sagar wins Summer Golf Meet

Chandigarh, May 17
Sagar Bhatia was declared best gross winner in the Summer Golf Tournament organised by Forest Hill Golf and Country Club here today. It was played on stableford against full handicap under two categories — senior and junior. Around 50 players took part in the tournament.
