17 Shishu Niketan girls for skating championship

As many as 17 eves of the Shishu Niketan Skating Club, Sector 22, are part of the Chandigarh Roller Skating team which will represent UT at the 41st National Roller Skating Championship to be held at Visakhapatnam from May 20 to 25. Stating this, Ms S. Khorana, Principal of Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, said presently they had more than 100 trainees who practice under roller hockey coach Balwinder Johal. Later, Mr Johal stated that two skaters Shakun Salwan and Jyoti Kaushik had won a bronze medal each in the national games held in Visakhapatnam in December, 2002. Shakun has also been selected to represent Indian women roller hockey team at the Asian roller skating meet to be held in Akita, Japan, from June 12 to 15. Varinder Pal Singh and Kuljinder Singh, who will represent boys roller hockey team, are gold medalists in this event at the previous nationals games. The members of the Shishu Niketan club who are part of the UT skating team are: roller hockey — (Junior girls) Akanksha Jolly (GK), Neyhal Salwan, Jyoti Kaushik, Jyoti Pannu, Parminder Kaur, Jasmeet Kaur, Komal Gupta and Anandita. Senior girls: Mantisha Sharma, Shakun Salwan, Ashm Kataria, Manish Dhillon, Shivani Sharma and Nitika. Boys: (Sub-junior) Shubham Sharma (GK), Varinder Pal Singh. Junior: Saurabh Munjal and Kuljinder Singh.
Kho-kho championshipSanjay Public School Club, Sector 44, and Government High School, Sector 24, have made it to the last four of the Chandigarh Junior Kho-Kho championship in the boys and girls sections, respectively. The championship started here on Saturday at Government Model High School, Sector 43, grounds. The finals will be played tomorrow from 4.30 pm. Nine boys’ teams and six girls’ teams are taking part. Earlier, Mr Bir Singh, Principal of the host school, inaugurated the meet. Results — boys (Pool A) GMHS-28 b GHS-37 by one turn and one point; SPS club-44 b GMHS-28 by one turn and one point. Pool B: Eagle club b GHS-24 by one turn and seven points; GMHS-43 b SN School, Sector 22, by one turn and five points. Girls (Pool A): GHS-24 b GHS-43 by one turn and nine points. Pool B: GMHS-28 b GHS-37 by one turn and six points.
Cricket tourneyA superb batting performance by Vaneet Chawla (51 of 64 balls with six fours) enabled Prestige Honda Cricket Club to beat Ranbaxy XI by 44 runs to win the final of the first Tau Devi Lal Inter-Media Employees Cricket Tournament at the Sector 3 cricket stadium, Panchkula, here on Saturday. Ms Seema Chaudhary, President, Panchkula Municipal Council, gave away the prizes. The following were declared the best: best all-rounder — Dr Paramjit Singh, best batsman — Vaneet Chawla, best bowler — J.S. Pahwa, best wicketkeeper — Deepinder Singh Chhabra. Electing to bat Prestige Honda openers Vaneet Chawla and Madan Joshi (28) put on 48 runs in just 10 overs. Vikas Kansal (24) and Subodh Bist (26 not out) ensured a total of 156 runs in the allotted 30 overs. In reply Ranbaxy batsman found the going tough against some tight bowling by Prestige Honda pacers Subodh Bist (3 for 26) and Madan Joshi (3 for 29). Subodh Bist was declared Man of the Match. Brief scores: Prestige Honda XI 156 for 7 in 30 overs (Vaneet Chawla 51, Madan Joshi 28, Subodh Bist 26 n.o., Vikas Kansal 24, J.S. Pahwa 3 for 20, Vinod Malik 2 for 31, Nitin Narad 2 for 32). Ranbaxy XI 112 all out (Gunwant Singh 28, Aneed Singh Duggal 21, Sandeep Nayyar 20, Subodh Bist 3 for 26, Madan Joshi 3 for 29, Netra Bhandari 2 for 14, Vikas Kansal 2 for 18).
Chess tournamentThe Chandigarh Chess
Association will hold the UT State Chess championship from May 23 to 26 at St Kabir School, Sector 26. A team of four will be selected to represent UT in the National ‘B’ Chess Champinship-2004 to be held at Vijaywada from June 16. Entries will close on May 22.
