She loves to play with water colours
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, April 29
These days, when a majority of artists are turning to oil paintings, Kamal Kandhari loves delicate strokes of water colours and has produced some beautiful paintings in water colours and marker pens.

Kamal says, “Painting has been a passion with me as long back as I can remember. I always sketched and painted and won several certificates for excelling in painting competitions held in Sophia School, Merath, where I did my schooling. After doing my postgraduation in textile and fashion designing from Panjab University, Chandigarh, I joined a fashion academy as a teacher. When my daughter was born four years ago, I had to quit the job, Later, I took to painting seriously.”

Kamal says she is very experimental and spontaneous in her outlook, and hence she has tried painting with water colours. “People do not like working with water colours as there is no room for any mistake. But then I started making my water colours look different by using pens. Postage stamps of various countries provide me with a lot of subject matter. I have many traditional books in Chinese and Japanese art and I use them as my subjects.”

She has turned professional now and gets a lot of orders to make paintings for interiors of houses. Kamal says, “Naturally, I retain the colours of the interiors, and choose a matching frame. I also make use of colours that are available in houses. If plastic paint or enamel paint is being used for painting walls and doors, I make use of them. I like to make sets of paintings as one piece of painting is out. Sequences of paintings are in and they provide more interesting material for viewing.”

She loves paintings flowers in different styles and arrangements. Kamal has made numerous greeting cards which were picked up by some companies and marketed, too.

Kamal got a big challenge when she was asked to paint a mural in oil colours in the school where her daughter got admission. She thought it was an imposing task as oils have not been her medium of painting. But she has done an excellent job and the Principal is highly appreciative of her effort.

Kamal has a lot of ideas up her sleeve. For children’s rooms, she has prepared paintings in the form of kites and hung them against a background of clouds painted on walls. She is equally adept in making fashion illustrations. As if that is not enough, she is also a cartoonist.
