Mismatched blood groups, matched kidneys
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, April 27
They had never seen each other, had never heard of each other. But they both had one thing in common — their husbands were suffering from kidney failure. There was another thing common. The two wives were helpless because of a “mismatch”. Today they donated kidneys to each other’s husbands. The transplants were out carried successfully by the doctors at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here.

The condition of both was reported to be stable.  “If all goes well, they would be discharged after about a week,” said a doctor attending the couples.  The two couples would not have met each other had they not arrived at the PGI in search of hope about four months back.

“They talked and realised that the problems faced by them were identical. Wasting little time, they went in for the necessary tests,” he added. “The results filled their bleak lives with hope as the blood groups matched”. Giving details, the doctor asserted that one operation was carried out on Monday, the other was performed today. He added that Mritunjaya Singh of Bihar got kidney from Suman Devi of Shimla, while her husband Kishori Lal got kidney from Meera.
