2 get life term for burning woman for dowry

Bhiwani, April 23
The district court here today convicted a father and son of burning to death Suman and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The Judge passed stricture against sub-inspector Harbans Lal, who was an investigating officer in the case, stating that his role was partisan.

According to prosecution, Suman, wife of accused Gobind Ram, resident of Ram Nagar Colony, Bhiwani, was admitted to local general hospital on November 25, 2001 with 100 percent burn injuries. She was soon referred to medical college Rohtak where Chief Judicial Magistrate, Rohtak recorded her dying declaration wherein the deceased said that her husband Gobind Ram and father-in-law Prem Sagar poured kerosene oil upon her and set her on fire.

She said her father had given dowry but she was tortured for more dowry. The District and Sessions Judge, R. C Bansal, after hearing both the parties found the investigating officer unfair in the case.

The court said that the IO deliberately attempted to convert the case into suicide by recording statements of one Santosh Devi. The court sentenced the accused father and son to imprisonment for life under sections 302, 34 of the India Penal Code and two years rigorous imprisonment.
