International conclave on hepatobiliary
and pancreatic cancers
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 20
Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre is organising theme-based international conference on hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers on April 24 and 25 at Le Meridian Hotel. The conference will be attended by more than 350 delegates from various parts of India and abroad.

Hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers constitute five per cent of all cancers in India. During last decade, there has been rise in incidence of gallbladder cancers partly attributable to our diet. The exact cause of gallbladder cancers is not known but high incidence along Gangetic belt in Northern India makes us think that industrial pollutants could be contributing to the rising incidence of gallbladder diseases.

There is a significant association between gallstones and gallbladder cancer. Gallstones are present in 74 to 92 per cent of patients with gallbladder cancer. The risk of gallbladder cancer increases directly with gallstone size. Patients with gallstones 2-2.9 cm in diameter have 2.4 times higher relative risk of developing gallbladder cancer whereas patients with gallstones three centimetre in diameter have 10 times higher risk. Patients with long-standing chronic cholecystitis can develop calcification of gallbladder wall (known as porcelain Gallbladder). It is possible that chronic inflammation and infection of gallbladder increase the risk of developing gallbladder cancer. Twenty-two per cent of patients with calcified gallbladders have gallbladder cancers.

Unfortunately, there is no screening test to detect these cancers early except for ultrasound of abdomen. More than 90 per cent of these cancers are detected in advanced stage when goal of treatment has remained palliative and not curative, a release said.
