DUTA activists demand probe against VC

New Delhi, April 20
Activists of the Delhi University Teachers’ Association continued with their relay fast for the second day today in protest at the functioning of the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Deepak Nayyar.

The DUTA president, Mr Aditya Narayan Misra, demanded the institution of visitor’s inquiry into the functioning of the VC’s financial, administrative and academic irregularities. “We have issued a white paper mentioning all details of the irregularities of the VC and have already sent it to the President of India. We are expecting an early response from that end.” He said that it would be in the benefit of every one as the money given to the university was public money and no one had to right to misuse it.

DUTA has also demanded withdrawal of the UGC’s so-called Modal Act, which proposes total withdrawal of government funding from University. The DUTA officials have said that if the visitor’s inquiry would not be instituted into the functioning of the VC they would go on indefinite strike after opening of the university in July 2004.

Bail plea of Hotel Regent owner rejected

New Delhi, April 20
A city court has rejected the anticipatory bail application of ‘Professor’ Satvir Singh, prime accused in a multi-crore call-girl racket case. Singh is the owner of Hotel Regent in Karol Bagh, where the nine Azerbaijani girls were arrested for allegedly being involved in a flesh trade racket.

Additional District and Sessions Judge S. N. Dhingra turned down the application of Singh as he allegedly committed offences which were very serious in nature. The police had told the court it was yet to find out since when the accused was running the flesh trade and also the modus operandi.

Singh (55), a native of Haryana, reportedly amassed property worth more than Rs 200 crore from the racket and is known to have his racket extended up to Mumbai and Jaipur.

Earlier, the Metropolitan Magistrate in charge of the Karol Bagh area, Mr A. K. Kauhar, issued notice to Singh to reply to the application of the police regarding the sealing of the hotel, which was situated close to public places like places of worship and schools.

The police also told the Magistrate about securing more incriminating material in the locker of the hotel. On the night of April 1, the police arrested nine girls of Azerbaijan along with the Hotel Regent Manager on charges of running a prostitution racket from the inn and claimed to have seized Rs 6 lakh in cash from the premises.

Women aged between 19 and 40 years had come to India on a tourist visa and were nabbed when a police team raided Hotel Regent.

Man gets life term for killing wife

New Delhi: A 30-year-old man was today sentenced to life imprisonment by a city court for murdering his wife after suspecting her of infidelity. The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr O. P. Saini, also imposed a fine of Rs 500 on the convict Pratap. Pratap, a native of Sikar in Rajasthan, and Rajni had tied the knot in January 2001 and were staying in the Sadar Bazar area. On July 13, 2001, Rajni’s brother Nanak Chand, who was living nearby, had heard her cries and went to her residence along with another brother, Gopi, and saw Pratap throttling her.

Chand and Gopi then forcibly opened the door and found Rajni lying dead on the floor in a pool of blood. The body also had head injuries. Though Pratap tried to flee he was overpowered by Rajni’s brothers. TNS

Man fined for false complaint against judge

Bhiwani, April 20
The District and Sessions Judge, Mr R. C. Bansal, convicted a complainant for filing a false complaint against a Judge and fined him Rs 500 today. Besides, the Judge transferred the case of this complainant from the court of the Judge concerned.

According to information, the General Manager of Haryana Roadways, Mr Mukesh Kumar Ahuja, had registered a case under Sections 323, 353, 186, 506 and 216 of the IPC in the police station against Suresh Kumar on December 21, 1998. The case was under consideration in the court of Judge Jasbir Singh. The defendant, Suresh Kumar, filed an application with the District and Sessions Judge on March 9 and said that Ahuja had been sitting for several hours in the room of the said Judge. According to the complainant, he was not given adequate time for inquiry during witness in the court.

He urged that the case be transferred from the court of Mr Jasbir Singh. The court gave a patient hearing to both the parties and found the complaint as false. The judge slapped a fine of Rs 500 on the complainant whereas the court transferred the case to another court on the request of the Judge concerned. OC

LIFW seeks to infuse new talent

Amidst allegations of “cost cutting” the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) announced the names of 48 models, including 21 “fresh faces”, who will walk the ramp at the LIFW from April 27 to May 3.

While some of the “big names” in the modelling circuit are reported to have accused the LIFW of “not paying them their rightful fees”, there are others who claim to have “other engagements”.

But trying to focus on the “seriousness” of the event, the FDCI chose to refute the allegations and went ahead to select 21 new models. These new models from Delhi include Shivani Sabikhi, Sharan Mishra, Shruti Chauhan, Lu Gill, Ester, Sonalika Sahay, Neha Kapoor, Abrar Ali, Ignetius Camilo and Gaurav Sachdev.

Representing Mumbai are Nolana D’melo, Raman, Upen Patel, Nitin, Prashant Ranyal, Bhanu, Bobby, Kapil And Karan Sood. There are two models from Bangalore, Rachel and Tony.

Lest the janta at the show is both disappointed and deprived of watching some of the favourite faces, there are “seasoned” faces including that of Sheetal Mallar, Viveka Babaji, Michelle Innes, Jesse Randhawa, Fleur Xavier, Vidisha Pavate, Diandra Soares, Carol Gracias and Indrani Das Gupta. The male fraternity will be represented by Ajay Balhara, Aditya Bal, Upen Patel, Kapil, Karan Sood, Ignetius Camilo and Gaurav Sachdev.

Justifying the “fresh new faces”, Vinod Kaul, Executive Director, FDCI said, “In keeping with the FDCI’s mandate of growing the fashion design industry in India, we seek to infuse new talent in the industry. Just like Lakme India Fashion Week has been a platform for new designers over the last three years; it should also be a launching pad for upcoming models. We had an excellent response to the new model auditions this year and I would like to welcome the 21 new models who have been selected to be a part of India’s largest fashion event ”.

After Death… 

The designer duo, Shantanu and Nikhail are taking of the surreal through their latest line of clothes. Presenting the history of self understanding Their Fall Winter 2005 collection to be exhibited at the Lakme India Fashion Week 2004, titled ‘After Death’, is inspired by the Era of Jesus, symbolising, “ the innocence and truth of mankind”.

The collection is all “about glorification of the woman in her most innocent appeal”, claim Shantanu and Nikhil. The designer duo attempt to create a spectacle on ramp, which will conjure the images of the great event leading to redemption of the mankind.

The designers will present “varied moods and ideas in their collection signifying strength, subdued glamour, natural elegance and sadness metamorphosed into hope leading to beatitude”.

On display will be close to 40 garments for women for, which natural fibers, handloom silk, Antique Rayon, Victorian silk, wool with dyed effects and chiffon have been used. There has been also use of specially created hand made fabrics.

To emphasise the “age of innocence” the designers have not made use of any modern fabrics. Highlight of the collection is the aesthetic and innovative usage of metal accessories. The designers have specially created hand crafted metal coins very similar to the ones found in the age of Christ. Surface ornamentation has been done to the fullest in this collection. The entire collection has been embellished with metal coins giving each garment a stunning appeal. Interesting jewellery pieces have been created out of these metal coins.

Shantanu and Nikhil have used the colour of God – dusky gold, predominantly. The colour is symbolic of “a beautiful soft light, the light of God”. Other colours used in the collection are all natural hues.

“To further enhance the beautiful form of human body”, the duo have used contemporary styling and modern silhouettes. There are flared skirts with free flowing rayon tops depicting the pinnacle of emotion of the age. Each detailing reflects the emotion of hope that came about after the Saviour of the world paid the price of human suffering, misery and anguish.

Cool summer collections 

Freelook wants you to “feel good, look good” this summer. Their range for the hot months has been “designed keeping in mind the international trends and is broadly categorised under work wear, casual wear, energy gear and urban fashion”.

Dazzling colours, cool fabrics, perfect cuts and carefree elegance, Westside claims these to the hallmarks of their summer range. There is the ‘the stripe sage’ for men, women and children. The women’s collection includes bias multi striped knee length skirts, striped blouses, striped long tunics with embroidery and for men there are shirts in stripes.

Lee Cooper’s theme for the season is ‘characteristic grey’, with colours including granite, charred, smoke, gravel, ash and tar.

The collection includes fashion bottoms including damaged jeans for the rugged retro look, jog-in jeans and crushed jeans.

The fabrics used are lycra, double dyed denims, textured denims, multicounts and heavy slubby fabrics.

Designer Vijaylakshmi Dogra’s Summer Hues comprises of long crinkled skirts, short wraparounds, sarongs, kaftans and short kurtis. Fabrics used are georgette, chanderi, maheshwari, linen and cotton.

For the “man on the move” designer Ajay Mehra, under his label ‘Potrait’, has launched shirts styled like kurtis for the summer. Made in linen and blends of cotton, these kurtis and shirts have “innovative detailing in stitch lines” that are made “even more attractive because of minimal hand embroidery.

Shoppers Stop has unveiled ‘Escape’ for the summer months under private labels, Life and Stop for women and Vettorio Fratinin for men.

Escape takes its inspiration from the “times of stress and frenetic urban living, where people are increasingly moving towards natural sources for relief and succour”, the collection “symbolises the shift”.

Summer pastels and vibrant hues, prints and stripes in linen and cotton comprise the collection.

The new season at “As”, Ashish Soni’s label is “all about figure hugging fits for modern day Aphrodite”. As for the colours, “there is the use of what is termed as ‘unisex colours’. These include the blackened shades of charcoal, navy and black and complemented by the soft nostalgic palette of dusty rose, powder blue and ivory. “The overall colourscape is still in retro mood as the present is dicey and the future is scary”.

There are “dramatic silhouettes, the key being the face framing jacket. The collection feels as if you are being led into a more refined world”. 

Dazzling dazzle with Swarovski

Swarovski plans to unveil its latest offering XILION, launched internationally at Milan, in the forthcoming LIFW where six designers, Rohit Bal, Suneet Verma, Tarun Tahiliani, Manish Arora, Rocky S and Malini Ramani would be showcasing the trends for the season using Swarovski XILION in their creations.

The company claims that the secret of the XILION is “its new and unique cut. Alternating facets of different sizes and a specially designed table face produce perfect refraction and particularly intense light distribution” for an inimitable brilliance.

Baisakhi celebrations by Muskan Art for Humanity

Muskan Art for Humanity, a renowned social and cultural organisation organised a cultural evening on Baisakhi. A fashion show and dance competition were the main attractions of the event.

Baby Aakriti Gupta gave a mesmerising dance performance on both classical and modern beats. All the key persons associated with this organisation, Mr. Ajay Rastogi, Mr.Vasudev Kansal, Mr. Chandar Gupta, Mr. Vijay Gupta and Mr. Rajesh Arora, were present on the occasion. The event was compered by Ms Uma and Mr Narendra Bhola. Choreography was done by Mr Vikas Maurya.
