Chandigarh Area win opening tie

Chandigarh, April 19
Chandigarh Area clinched their opening tie by defeating Jammu Area 28-5 in the five-day Western Air Command Inter-Area Handball Championship-2004 which began here today at 12 Wing Air Force Station. Air Officer Commanding, Air Cmde S.S. Tilloo inaugurated the meet. In all eight teams from various areas under the Western Air Command are taking part in the championship. They are: Jammu, Halwara, Bathinda, Adampur, Hindon, Ambala, Suratgarh and Chandigarh.

In the opening tie, the hosts prevailed upon the Jammu Area team right from the beginning. At the half time, score was 18-2 in favour of Chandigarh Area who played a well knit game and eventually overpowered Jammu to emerge winner.

For Chandigarh, Jayan was the top scorer with eight goals followed by U.C. Dahiya and S.K. Gulia who scored five goals each. R.K. Singh netted four goals for his team, while Ram Krishna and S. Singh scored two goals each. S.S. Raj and Reddy netted one goal each. For losers, the highest scorer was Rohila who scored two goals while Suresh, Rakesh and P.L. Kumar scored one goal each.

Tomorrow four matches will be played with two in the morning and two in the evening.

Minerva Academy win

Minerva Academy outplayed SSP Network XI by nine wickets to move into the final of the Videocon League-cum-Knockout Cricket Tournament in a match played at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32. In another tie, Khushman International XI beat Phoenix XI by seven wickets.

Cricket meet

MCA XI put up a huge total of 274 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 90 overs and in reply, Minor District XI were eight runs for the loss of one wicket on the opening day of the tie played between Mohali Cricket Association XI and Minor District XI here today at the MCA grounds, Mohali.

Rahul Mankotia who scored 60 runs was the highest scorer for MCA and S. Singh hammered 56 runs. Harpreet and Hemant scored 35 runs and 24 runs, respectively. Aman claimed four wickets for 53 runs while Gurfej bagged two wickets for 57 runs.
