Conference highlights new technique in hip arthroplasty
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 17
Leading orthopedic surgeons from North India met here today to highlight a new technique in hip arthroplasty at a symposium conducted by Max Healthcare.

Experts led by Dr S. K. S. Marya and Mr Derek McMinn, inventor of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) Surgery, demonstrated how hip surfaces can be safely transplanted using bone preserving techniques and wear-resistant bearings.

The early failure rate of hip surface transplant was strikingly high due to the enormous volume of polyethylene debris produced. This had earned the hip-resurfacing concept a bad reputation.

The modern or the newer generation hip resurfacing devices, which employ a ‘Metal on Metal’ bearing, have a dramatic success rate of over 98 per cent.

Currently with more than 100 surgeons taking it up actively in Europe, most major orthopedic implant manufacturers are developing their own version of ‘Metal on Metal’ hip resurfacing systems.

The resurfacing procedure is by far most relevant in the Indian sub continent and the rest of Asia where primary hip osteoarthritis of the elderly is extremely rare and most individuals who require arthroplasty of the hip are young.

Further, certain social demands like sitting or praying on the floor that are integral to many Asian cultures, is made feasible only after the hip resurfacing option.

Max Healthcare is the country’s first comprehensive provider of standardized, seamless, integrated and world-class healthcare services.

Focused on the National Capital Region for the first phase, Max Healthcare has two primary care clinics, (Dr Max™ Clinics), ten Dr. Max™ Implants and three Secondary Care Hospitals at NOIDA, Panchsheel and Pitampura.

The tertiary care hospital at Saket is in advanced stages of construction and is scheduled to be opened in phases.

A 100-bed hospital at Gurgaon is also under construction. Max Healthcare is also seeking to establish its presence in East Delhi.

As part of its vision of achieving medical excellence, Max Healthcare Institute Limited has been organizing series of ‘Continuing Medical Education’ programmes from time to time.

Monthly self-examination of breasts is must
Tripti Nath

Monthly self-examination of breasts is mustDharamshila Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (DCHRC) invited general physicians, surgeons and gynaecologists for an interactive session with its oncologists on Saturday afternoon.

The main purpose of holding the session was to discuss various clinical situations that could help general physicians, surgeons and gynaecologists in their day to day practice. Three surgical oncologists, Dr Arun Goel, Dr M. J. Ganesh and Dr Pawan Gupta, the Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr Dinesh Singh, and his colleague, Dr Sandeep Agrawal and Medical Oncologist, Dr Malaya Nandy, addressed the participants on various aspects of breast cancer including surgical options in early breast cancer, treatment options after surgery, line of treatment in locally advanced breast cancer, advanced breast cancer, breast cancer, which has spread to the lungs and hormonal management.

Dr Dinesh Singh, who has been associated with DCHRC even before its inception ten years ago, says that there is a discernible rise in the number of breast cancer cases. “Most women who are referred to my department for treatment are suffering from breast cancer. Unmarried women, married women who have no children, women who have family history of breast cancer in first degree relatives or women who are obese are in the high-risk group of breast cancer. Monthly self-examination of breasts is necessary for timely diagnosis. This has brought down mortality due to breast cancer in the West.

If a woman feels a lump in the breast, she should consult the doctor immediately. In the early stage of breast cancer, removal of the entire breast is not required. The treatment involves removal of tumour with two centimetre margin followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy,” said Dr Singh.

HFI submits MoU to Kalam

Mr Anil Lalwani, President of Hemophilia Federation (India) (HFI), a self-help non-government organisation run by Persons With Hemophilia (PWHs), led a ten-member delegation to Rashtrapati Bhawan on Friday, to submit a memorandum of appeals to the President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. In their appeal on the eve of the World Hemophila Day (April 17), the delegation sought Dr Kalam’s intervention to ensure provision of free Anti-Hemophilic Factor (AHF) to all Persons with Hemophila and inclusion of Hemophila in various categories of disability in The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995.

Hemophilia is a lifelong genetic bleeding disorder. AHF is needed for management of hemophilia. Due to high cost of AHF, most PWH in India have to depend on infusion of unsafe, wet blood products as Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) or lyophilised cryoprecipitate. This exposes them to blood-borne infections as HIV/AIDS and other Hepatitis infections.

The HFI feels that declaration of Hemophilia as a disability would entitle the PWHs to special considerations promised in the Act. According to Mr Lalwani, there are as many as 70,000 Persons with Hemophilia (PWHs) in India. The delegation also appealed for grant-in-aid to HFI, which has vast network of 63 chapters across the country. The Pune-based President of HFI, who is suffering from severe hemophila, said that Dr Kalam gave them a patient hearing and promised to forward their memorandum to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

He offered to explore the possibility of indigenous manufacture of AHF by speaking to biotechnologists. For the first time in December, the Ministry of Health imported 12.5 lakh units of AHF. The Ministry has promised to get another 12.5 lakh units. Mr Lawani said that distribution of the first consignment of AHF would begin this week through the HFI chapters.

Digvijay, Jumman to meet in title clash
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, April 17
Digvijay Singh indulged in a birdie blitz to knock out defending champion Vijay Kumar in a semi-final battle of the Rs 10 lakh prize money SRF All-India Matchplay Championship at the Delhi Golf Club course on Saturday. Digvijay of Meerut won 3 and 2.

In the second semi-final, Jumman beat Rafiq Ali 3 and 1 to enter the 36-hole final.

Vijay Kumar opened the day’s round with a birdie. A one-iron and two putts on the green saw Vijay go one up early on. On the very next hole, Digvijay dropped a shot from the centre of the fairway to hand his opponent a two-hole lead. On the seventh, Vijay Kumar found the rough with this five-iron to drop his first shot of the day, thereby reducing his margin of lead by one hole.

Two halved holes later, the duo headed to the tenth tee box with the scoreline reading one-up in Vijay’s favour. On the 10th, Vijay hit his second shot past and to the left of the green to lose the hole to Digvijay. The score at this stage was even. Then, Digvijay went on to script a memorable victory. He won the 13th with a par and the 15th and 16th with birdies.

The Jumman-Rafiq tussle was like a see-saw battle, but Jumman went one-up with a par on the ninth. The duo birdied to win two each of the first four holes. With the tenth and 11th holes tied, Jumman managed to win the 12th with a par, thanks primarily to Rafiq’s journey into the rough.

Roles were reversed on the following hole with Jumman’s driver finding the left jungle and Rafiq playing it safe for par.

On the 14th, Rafiq overshot the green to drop a shot and hand Jumman back a two-hole lead. The 15th and 16th were halved with birdies and pars, and Rafiq faced the daunting prospect of winning two straight holes to stay in the game. But he bogied on the 17th to give Jumman victory on a platter.
