Support PDP nominee, NC leader to voters Srinagar, April 17 Replying questions at a press conference here today, Mr Dilawar Mir, representing the Rafiabad constituency of Baramula district, asked the voters to support PDP candidate Nizamuddin Bhat contesting from Baramula. Former minister and Deputy Speaker Mir had been elected from Rafiabada for the past five consecutive terms since 1977. Except for 1996 elections, when he was elected as a candidate of the Janata Dal, Mr Mir had been elected as the NC candidate. After 1996 elections, he had returned to the NC and was raising his voice against the “downslide in the political character” of his party. Referring to the change of leadership from Mr Farooq Abdullah to his son Omar Abdullah in June, 2002, he claimed that Mr Omar was “foisted on the party in the most undemocratic fashion”. He also criticised the NC for its role in the aftermath of rejection of Autonomy Resolution by the Centre and the massacre of Muslims in Gujarat as the party continued to remain an ally of the NDA government and Mr Omar as a minister. Mr Dilawar Mir also expressed concern over the way in which the NC made a selection of the candidates for Baramula and Srinagar. He added that Baramula candidate Abdul Rasheed Shaheen was a defaulter with the state Financial Corporation and owed it Rs 1.25 crore. He claimed that the selection of Mr Omar from Srinagar was also done “purely for the family interests”. |
Rule of the gun must end, says Panthers’ manifesto Jammu, April 17 Mr Bhim Singh, Chairman of the Panthers Party (PP), who is himself contesting the Lok Sabha election from the Udhampur constituency against the Congress candidate, Mr Lal Singh, released the manifesto. The Congress is a major partner in the coalition. The manifesto accused the parties that have ruled the state of having “misused” and “abused” the trust imposed in them by the people. It said the rule of the gun must end. The party has laid stress on reorganisation of the state for security, unity, peace and promotion of a cultural identity. It promises general amnesty to all political prisoners in the state and the rest of the country. To create employment avenues, the IT,telecom, power and mining sectors will be opened and national and multinational industries will be invited here. The manifesto says the drilling operations of the ONGC will be relaunched at various places in Jammu, Udhampur and Rajouri. The Centre should provide a special package for the implementation of the Wazir Commission report for creating three new districts in the Jammu division. It has accused the successive Kashmiri rulers of discriminating with the Jammu region where the number of voters and the area was more than that of the Kashmir Valley, but the number of seats in the Assembly was less. The PP has demanded that nine of the 24 seats reserved for the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) should be added in the Jammu region to remove the imbalance. The manifesto sought setting up of a judicial commission to probe into corruption and misuse of power by legislators, ministers and bureaucrats since 1951. |
