Ludhiana struggle against Amritsar

Ludhiana, April 13
Hosts Ludhiana were struggling against Amritsar on the first day of the two-day match of the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament (u-15 years) for Sushil Bali Trophy, held at the Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys ground, here today. At draw of stumps, in reply to the visitor’s first innings total of 180 all out, Ludhiana were facing an uphill task as they were 100 for five after 42 overs.

Amritsar won the toss and opted to bat first. Main contributors were Gurnoor Singh and Lakshya, who chipped in with 46 and 36 runs, respectively. Ludhiana bowlers did a commendable job by restricting Amritsar to 180 runs. Ludhiana bowlers, particularly Varun Chitkara and captain Gagandeep Dhand, excelled, claiming three and four wickets and conceding 34 and 43 runs, respectively.

Ludhiana began their innings a dismal note. They were tottering at 13 for 3, but thanks to some sensible batting by Amrinder Brar (45) and Geetansh (30), managed to reach 100. They added 77 runs for the fourth wicket partnership.

Chess meet on April 24

Ludhiana, April 13
The Ludhiana District Chess Association (LDCA) will organise a District Chess Meet here at the assembly hall of Christian Medical College on April 24 and 25. According to Dr Rajinder Chawla, general secretary, LDCA, the matches will be played on a Swiss league basis for five rounds and there will be no separate categories for boys and girls. Only those players, who are registered with the LDCA, will be allowed to participate in the championship.

Entries may be submitted to Dr Chawla at the venue on April 24 at 10 am or he can be contacted over mobile number 3119661. The participants will have to bring their own chess kits and clocks. Performance in this meet will be taken into consideration while selecting the Ludhiana team for the coming Punjab-B Chess Championship to be held next month, Dr Chawla said.
