Lawyers to hold rally in front of High Court
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 10
Continuing with their protest against the Delhi High Court’s decision to transfer certain civil cases to Karkardooma courts, Tis Hazari district court lawyers today decided to hold a demonstration in front of the High Court on April 13.

However, Shahdara Bar Association has welcomed the move of the High Court to shift the civil cases of East Delhi to the Shahdara District Courts at Karkardooma, saying that the people of the area would be relieved of strenuous journey to Tis Hazari court complex.

This is the fourth in the series of agitation in protest against the allocation of civil work to judges at Shahadara district courts in Trans-Yamuna area and the shifting of some courts at Tis Hazari in North Delhi to a newly-constructed block at Rohini in North-West Delhi.

The last protest was observed on March 24, when Tis Hazari lawyers boycotted the courts following a daylong strike called by the Delhi Bar Association (DBA).

The DBA Secretary, Mr Sanjeev Nasiar, said the transfer of civil cases was against the uniform distribution system with the trial of civil cases being accelerated at the cost of criminal cases.

“The irony is that a civil judge at Karkardooma is dealing with 190 cases while his counterpart working as a magistrate is having 3,200 criminal cases,” he said, alleging that no effort had been made to reduce pending cases.

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 10
A Delhi court has sentenced a woman and her brother to life imprisonment for killing their daughter-in-law after harassing her for dowry.

Additional Sessions Judge H. P. Sharma also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on Shakeela and brother Abdul Razak, saying that there was no reason to disbelieve the dying declaration of the victim, Shehzadi. Besides, the court also sentenced the victim’s husband, Harmat, to two years’ imprisonment and fined him Rs 5,000. Shehzadi was admitted to Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital here with 85 per cent burns on November 11, 2000. In her dying declaration, Shehzadi alleged she was tortured by her in-laws who wanted her to bring a motorcycle as dowry.

On the night of November 11, 2000, Shakeela and Razak again confronted her and set her on fire after drenching her in kerosene, she alleged. However, her parents and brother declined to support her case, saying that she had never complained to them about the alleged torture.

Notwithstanding their statements, the court convicted the accused and sentenced them, expressing confidence in her dying declaration.
