One-day workshop on networking

Ludhiana, April 10
The Punjab College of Technical Education, PCTE, organised a one-day workshop on “Networking using Windows 2000” on its campus today. Around 50 students from various institutes of the region and 25 professional from the local industry participated in the day-long workshop.

Mr Anuhj Chopra, Sun Certified Network Engineer working as Networking Consultant, conducted the workshop for students and professionals. During the workshop, Mr Chopra discussed the intricacies and technicalities associated with setting up, configuring and fine-tuning the network. The PCTE has started a series of workshops on IT subjects and related topics. Topics covered during the workshop were unattended installation, creating users and groups, creating users and hardware profiles, disk quotas, accessing files and folders, encryption and decryption of files, network printing, remote installation server, remote client installation etc.

“During the second workshop on April 17, topics related to ‘Networking through Linux’ will be covered. Mr Chopra will conduct the workshop along with two professionals from industry,” said Dr K.N.S. Kang, Director, PCTE.

School annual function

Ludhiana, April 10
New Public High School, Ghumar Mandi, organised its annual cultural and prize distribution function here yesterday. Mr Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal, MLA, was the chief guest, while Ravinder Grewal, a folk singer, was the special guest. Ms Manjit Kaur, Deputy DEO, presided over the function.

Students presented a cultural show. A choreography, “Parnaam Shaheedan Nu”, on Shaheed Bhagat Singh was the main attraction of the function. Gidha, jago and solo dances were also performed. The chief guest gave away prizes to students for their achievements in studies, cultural activities and games. He congratulated the winners and urged them to follow the ideas shown by great men of the country. He was honoured with a memento.

Ravinder Grewal sang a song to the delight of the audience. The Principal, Ms B.Rai, highlighted the achievements of the school and thanked the guests. Mr H.S. Bedi, Ms Mohinder Kaur Johal and Mr S.S. Jhaj were the judges for the show. The guest of honour, Mr Harish Rai Dhanda, advocate, Mr G.S. Tiwana , ETO, Mr J.S. Dara advocate, Prof Jagpal Singh, Dr Soni, Mr Manmohan Singh, Exhibition Officer, and Mr Baldev Singh, Secretary, Kabir Society, were also present.

College students get degrees

Ludhiana, April 10
The fifth annual convocation of the BCM College of Education was held here this morning. The Registrar, Panjab University, Prof Paramjit Singh, was the chief guest. As many as 119 students were given degrees.

Addressing the students, the Registrar said they had to work hard as they were builders of the nation. Moreover, they had to shape the character of the students.

The annual report was read by Dr S.K. Nanda, Director of the college. Fifty-seven toppers were honoured.

Harneet Billing secured first position in the college, while Puja Soni and Satinder Kaur secured second and third position, respectively, in the examination conducted in 2003.

Three students were awarded college colours. Harneet Billing was awarded for academics, whereas Harmander Singh Kang and Paramjit Kaur received colours for excellence in cultural activities.Mr Satyanand Munjal, Co-chairman, Hero Cycles, thanked the chief guest and congratulated the students.

From Colleges Women cell set up at 
Ramgarhia Girls College

Ludhiana, April 10
To empower and create awareness among women, a women cell was inaugurated by Dr Pam Rajput, former Dean, Faculty of Arts, Panjab University, Chandigarh, at the local Ramgarhia Girls College.

Presiding over the function, Dr Rajput said in the present scenario where women and their individuality and identity was under a constant threat, the setting up of this cell was a positive step in checking their further exploitation. Addressing the staff members, Principal Harmit Kaur announced various programmes to be taken up by the cell.

Guru Nanak Khalsa College result: Students of M.Com I of the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, have shown 100 per cent result with all of them scoring above 65 per cent marks in first semester examinations of Panjab University held in November 2003.

A student Davinder Kaur, secured 80 per cent marks and stood first in the college. Another student, Jaskaran secured 79.8 per cent marks and stood second in the college and Robin got the third position securing 79.4 per cent marks.

Bulletin to be launched

A news bulletin for students, ‘Vidyarthi di Awaaz’ is to be launched by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad ( ABVP) from the coming week. This was stated by Mr Sanjeev Kapoor, vice-president of the ABVP ( Punjab).
He said the news bulletin would contain vital information about counselling for their career.

2 get 10-year RI for possessing poppy husk

Ludhiana, April 10
A city court has sentenced Pippal Singh of Moga and Tara Singh of Chambeli, Faridkot, to rigorous imprisonment of 10 years each for possessing poppy husk.
Delivering the verdict, Mr D.R. Arora, Additional Sessions Judge, held that the prosecution had successfully proved the guilt of the accused beyond any doubt.

A co-accused, Raj Kumar, had already been declared a proclaimed offender. The fourth accused, Pirthi Singh of Chambeli village, Faridkot is dead. The accused were booked under Section 15 of the NDPS Act at the Jagraon police station on September 11, 2000. The police seized 19 bags of poppy husk each weighing 30 kg from the accused. OC
