Mayor to win over dissident councillors
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, April 7
Mayor Nahar Singh Gill is learnt to have stepped in to win over some dissident councillors of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation who have so far maintained distance from the campaign of Mr Munish Tiwari, a Congress candidate for the LS poll. These councillors, including senior Deputy Mayor Prem Mittal, had been supporting the candidature of Gurcharan Singh Galib.

Yesterday, the Mayor held a meeting, which was attended by most of the city councillors who came out in support of Mr Tiwari. Besides Mr Gill, others who attended the meeting were District Congress Committee president Jagmohan Sharma, local MLA Surinder Dawar and other office-bearers of the party.

Mr Gill assured Mr Tiwari that entire rank and file of the party was behind him. He pointed out that a party should get precedence over an individual. Mr Gill claimed that the Congress would win the Ludhiana seat with a record margin.

Addressing the meeting, Mr Dawar said all city MLAs (Ludhiana has all Congress MLAs) would ensure that they improved their previous performance. He pointed out that the quantum of work done by the government, the legislators and the councillors in their respective areas would contribute towards Mr Tiwari’s chances of winning the poll.

Mr Jagmohan Sharma claimed that the party was getting a good response.
