Rallies on pulse polio

Chandigarh, April 2
Rallies for creating awareness about pulse polio immunisation campaign were taken out in the city today. Students of Sector 10 Government Model Senior Secondary School, along with students of Sector 16 General Hospital’s nursing department, participated in the rallies.

The nursing department students took part under the supervision of Dr Veena Sarna, Dr Subhash Satija, Dr Anita Sethi, Dr Soma and Dr Subhash Satija. Students of Sector 35 Government Model Senior Secondary School also took part in the rallies under the leadership of Dr Rajiv Sethi.

The students asked the public to join hands with the Health Department authorities to eradicate polio. The participants were accompanied by a team of doctors and teachers. The rallies passed through different sectors, including Sector 1 to Sector 18.

Another polio awareness campaign was carried out by students of Rai School in Sector 48.

Students holding placards enacted plays on streets to convey the message. The students also covered markets, housing societies and slums under the campaign.

A rally was also organised by the NSS unit of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32. Dr Kulsheshta, Medical Officer, General Hospital, flagged off the rally.

Students of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, took part in a rally. Ms Saroj Gupta, Principal, and Mr Amarjit Singh, programme officer of the NSS, organised the rally.

45 patients operated upon

A medical team from Visakhapatnam performed polio correction surgery on 45 persons at Shri Satya Narayan Mandir, Sector 22, today.

Though a total of 150 patients were examined yesterday, surgery was performed on 45 patients from Punjab, Haryana and the city. Fifteen doctors examined the patients.

Conference on safety in anaesthesia today

With patient’s safety, while being administered anaesthesia assuming increased attention, the local branch of the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists and the PGI is organising a conference on “safety in anaesthesia” here tomorrow.

Anaesthesiologists from all over the region will attend the conference, being held at the PGI. One of the primary aim of the conference is the safe conduct of anaesthesia so that the patient does not develop complications or any kind of side effects.

Since the delivering of anaesthesia involves administration of a large number of potent drugs and the use of multitude equipment to monitor the functioning of vital systems in the body, the safety aspect is very important. “Anaesthesia requires to be tailored to the surgical procedure and adjusted according to the medical condition of a patient and as such even a small error, if undetected, can prove to be fatal,” said doctors.

2 selected for sixes tournament

Chandigarh, April 2
Tarun Kapoor and Jaspreet Singh, both students of the Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology (CIET), Rajpura, have been selected to represent India at the 20th RBSC Cricket Sixes Tournament to be held in Bangkok, Thailand. Tarun Kapoor had represented India last year too. Both students will also participate in a three-day camp being held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from April 7 to April 9.

According to Ms Madhu Chitkara, Director, CIET, the boys are definitely going to prove their worth in the tournament and our coach Harinder Pal Singh, has played a major part in honing the skills of these boys.

Physical education lecturer dies at 27

Dr KshetrimayumChandigarh, April 2
Dr Kshetrimayum Ratan Singh, a lecturer in the Department of Physical Education, Panjab University, died of a heart attack yesterday morning. He was 27. A condolence meeting was held today at the university auditorium to pay homage to the departed soul. Dr Ratan Singh, who belonged to Manipur, had joined the department on November 20, 2002.
