Politics takes toll on
translation students Chandigarh, March 25 The problem arose when the session began last year. The chairman, Dr S.P. Sehgal, prepared the timetable for postgraduate classes as well as those of the diploma. While students were assigned to various teachers, the faculty was not given its workload for the session. Students of the diploma class approached Prof Jaya Prakash for their classes. He turned them away, saying he had received no intimation about who and what he was supposed to teach. The students approached the chairman, who told them to attend their classes with him, which they did all through the session. Interestingly, Dr Jaya Prakash was neither asked why he had refused to take students nor was the workload circulated among faculty members till as late as January 28 this year. However, a week back, the diploma students were told to go back to Prof Jaya Prakash to get their 50-page translation, essential for internal assessment, checked from, him. “We were given the option of either complaining in writing against Prof Jaya Prakash or getting the assignment checked from him. Just before the final examination, this came as a jolt for us. Finally, we approached Prof Jaya Prakash, who agreed to check our assignment. Whatever the politics in the department, students should not unnecessarily be dragged into this,” they rued. When contacted, the chairman, said he had allowed students to attend his class because they had told him Prof Jaya Prakash was unwilling, though he did not speak to him directly.”Anyway, I am not forcing students to give a complaint in writing against Prof Jaya Prakash. I was only trying to formalise the taking over of his students in my class. The students will not be made to suffer whatever the outcome,” he added. Justifying the delayed circulation of the workload to teachers, Dr Sehgal added,”Prof Jaya Prakash is a senior faculty member. If he had not got the workload, he could have asked me. Anyway, all faculty members had decided, in a meeting, that the last year’s time-table would be followed. This automatically implies that the workload, too, remains the same. Keeping this in mind, we did not circulate the workload this year.” |

Take care of your back before you flaunt it WITH the mercury soaring heavenwards, the time is ripe for flaunting glistening backs and be the soul of summer dos. But it is not as simple as taking out a backless or a deep-back dress and wearing it because an ill-maintained back or bad posture can mar the whole impact of the dress. The worry whether the dress is looking glamorous or tacky etches frown lines on many a pretty forehead. The depth should be according to the age, figure and occasion. One shoulder and halter tops and low cut kurtas and blouses are hot this summer. If inter-changeable halters by brands like Wrangler in interesting colour combinations like fuschia with burnt orange and pink with white are making young hearts beat faster, then so are the spaghetti tops, woven strap tees. These cool tops matched with shorts, jeans or pleated or A-line skirts are a favourite among youngsters all over. In the Indian fusion wear, backless cholis and deep back blouses teamed with mermaid skirts or fish kali lehengas and sarees look feminine and classy, says Seema, a city-based designer. “In summer the skin loses moisture. If you want to wear a backless outfit the best way is to have your back examined by a good dermatologist or skin specialist. Get it analysed and it is important to know whether the skin is oily or dry,’’ says Dr Rohit Bansal, a city-based dermatologist. The best way to acquire a gleaming back is to look after it well and regularly, he adds. This region is mostly prone to secondary skin problems like seborrhic dermatitis which is a reaction to dandruff and leads to itchy red spots. Acne and pigmentation are the most common problems that mar the beauty of the back. To avoid acne he advises the use of no oil on skin or hair, medicated soaps. Pigmentation or dark patches can be treated with glycolic peels but make sure that these are performed by experts, he advises. Ex foliation and drainage are essential for that silk smooth look, says Harveen of Cleopatra spa. Different ampules and serums combined with mechanical and manual techniques remove the dead skin and also reduce the ugly fat patches that occurs due to water retention. Spa treatments, thermal contour treatment leave the back toned and shapely, she claims. De-tan treatments are very good to remove the blotchy skin says Anita Kaushal, a beauty manager with VLCC. Weekly massage with aroma oils or gels, according to the skin type and use of detoxifying packs are what she recommends as musts for those who want to don those glamorous ensembles with elan. Bleaching the back is also a good way to acquire a glow but should be done with care as frequent bleaching also aggravates hair growth. Body polishing for back is also vital as it leaves the skin soft, glowing and supple. Ubtan or aluminum hydroxide crystals help polish the skin, says Babita, centre in charge, VLCC. A good scrub and loofah are all you need for day-to-day routine at home. Scrub and moisturise it everyday, particularly if the skin in oily. The fuller’s earth, rose water and grated carrot mask is good for making the skin soft. Help is also at hand if it is cellulite and unseemly tyres that are bothering you. VLCC offers essential oil therapy to disintegrate cellulite, and machines help in body contouring. For those willing to sweat it out in the gym, neck and shoulder exercises along with light weight training will make sure that the back muscles remain strong and is a matter of envy. The make-up too should match with the face. Otherwise it will not look natural. Dab a light foundation, preferably a shade higher than your skin colour. Harveen recommends water proof makeup to be at ease during sweaty days. Use light copper, bronze, brown or pink glitters for daytime and gold, silver, red, blue or other coloured glitters for evening time over the foundation for a shimmering effect. Crystal tattoos are another way to attract those envious glances. So shake the dust off those backless cholis and deep neck dresses and watch out for the effect behind your back. |
Big B moves on to Manali
HE may be chased by the media, fans and autograph- seekers everywhere he goes, but for him being Amitabh Bachchan is just as easy or just as tough as being the next person. When he walked into the bar of Forest Hill Resort on the last day of shooting for “Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Sathiyon” to interact with mediapersons for a few moments, it took some time for the awestruck journalists to detach themselves from the larger-than-life image of onscreen Amitabh and get to know the real person. A man of few words, Amitabh would not lap up to questions that bore testimony of awe. Ask him what it is to have a cult following, all he says is that he is grateful to people and God. The question what keeps him going, gets a single liner reply, “It’s my work. I love it.” Still hungry for a deeper insight, we move around, trying to know this demi-god through people who know him closely. “It’s a director’s dream to work with Amitabh Bachchan and I feel exactly the same way - ecstatic,” says Anil Sharma, director of the film. “When it comes to acting, Amitabh not only enacts his role but also infuses life into characters that go even beyond the imagination of writers or directors,” he says. He describes Amitabh as a disciplined actor with humility. “Besides his professionalism, his simplicity, and mannerism with his unit members show how great a person he is,” he says. For newcomer Sandali Sinha, working with Amitabh is an experience of a lifetime. “On my first day, I was a bundle of nerves, trying to put my best just to live up to whatever was expected of me. But he sensed my anxiety and helped me relax. Everything went on smoothly from there,” she says. Nagma, who is working with Big B for the second time, says the “first time I worked with him was in a dance sequence in “Lal Badshah”. This time too, I have started off with a dance item but am looking forward to scenes in which I will be interacting with him.” Sitting in one corner of the sets waiting for over half hour for Bobby Deol who has gone to his make-up room to change, Amitabh takes it all in his stride. “I am here to do my job and I just do it,” he says. “Amitabh could have easily gone and rested in his room rather than sit in the sun and wait for Bobby, but even today , he respects his directors the same way he used to when he was a newcomer,” says Vinod Deshpande, still cameraman of the unit who has a long association with the legend. “If you consider his acting ability, he is the only actor who could carry out a father and a son’s role in the same film with equal ease and he is the only actor who would stand up when he meets the director and crack jokes with spot boys,” he says adding that “this is why Amitabh Bachchan is Amitabh Bachchan.” |
The force called Amitabh Bachchan AN enigma with a cult following. His fierce gaze pierces through you, even as his soft mannerisms belie the force called Amitabh Bachchan. As the high and mighty fans of the superstar braved the sun and heat, which included among others a senior IAS officer of Haryana with her children, and a judicial officer of Punjab, it was not just star crazy fans out to get a photograph with any Bollywood Star. They were there to catch a bit of star dust that might have rubbed off the person called Big B. So while he waits inside his airconditioned camper for his fans to make way for him to walk the few 100 yards to bar at Forest Hill Resorts for an interaction with the media, he seems unfazed by the fans banging the windowpanes of the bar, asking him to wave or when he obliges a few of them with photographs, albeit through the window panes. Unpretentious, unassuming when sitting between shots or interacting with the press, and a through professional. Aloof to the adulation, or is he used to the attention anywhere he goes? What is it that even the high and mighty like to catch a glimpse of the star? Or are ready to take a day off from work (a senior officer posted in UT has been on leave since Monday to meet Mr Bachchan here) to capture him in their handycams, with the toddlers and the latter’s ayah’s in toe. A star known to maintain a strict and vigorous schedule, beginning his shoot as early as 7.30 in the morning and continuing till late evening, the star shows little signs of ageing. A perfectionist to the core, Amitabh ko gussa aata hai, when the slightest of movement of fans in his eye- view can distract him from giving a perfect shot of an emotional scene. But when hundreds of eyes pierce through him as he sits in between the shots, or fans clamour for autographs, he politely relents, asking his securitymen to collect everyone’s autograph book and get these inside the camper. A person who has fed generations of cine goers with his larger than life portrayal of the brooding young man of “Deewar”, the jilted lover of “Kabhie Kabhie”, and now as the ageing cop of “Khakee” or the anguished father in “Aitbaar”, the city threw open its arms to catch in on the saga of Amitabh Bachchan. It was thus that other than inviting the who’s who of the city to his resort for catching a glimpse of the Big B, Col. B.S. Sandhu says he has been flooded with calls, requesting for an entry. In fact, the snobometer of the social scene in the city has been dominated by talk of the megastar — who got a dekko; who got a pic and an autograph; or, the ultimate ones who also got to shake hands with Mr Bachchan and spoke to him for two minutes, though so far none of them have managed to get him home for a social do. But Mr Bachchan remains thoroughly grounded. He sits on three chairs one on top of another, for almost an hour, waiting for the next shot with co-star Bobby Deol, who has gone to change his get up. This perhaps explain why stars like Bobby Deol, too, first walk upto Mr Bachchan and exchange pleasantries before
beginning work on the last shot at the resort. — TNS |
Priceless collections at watch exhibition ITS back to the future. Connosiuers of antique watches in and around Chandigarh have displayed their priceless collections at the second annual heritage watch exhibition, being organised at Ethos, Sector 8. The oldest watch on display is the Hamilton Circa 1876. The rich collection of watches included pendant watches and brooch watches in chic designs, besides the pocket chain watches and watch in crystal ball shape. The Big fan AFTER Dharmendra whom
I am liking bestest of all stars (because he’s being Punjab da
puttar, na!), I am liking Amitabh too much. Actually, I only am his
biggest fanni (woman fan). Then after Amitabh, I’m liking Shah Rukh
Khan. I am hearing these both stars are coming into City Beautiful.
All stars are coming sometimes, sometimes but superstaran di te gal hi
hor hai, kyon? Amitji to has become king of my heart after Kaun banega
crorepati? My He was also wanting to go for programme but the phone
computer was a cheater cock. My He was giving right answer for
qualifying question also, but computer was rejecting him…kisse di
sifarish honi hai, hor ki! Amitji nu pata lag jaonda te unhanu kinna
dukh honda! That Mrs Khanna is phoning up early in the morning and
telling that she is going to see superstars shooting for fillum. The
mint she is putting the phone down, I am phoning Shoki Paaji and
telling “Paaji what is happening in your kingdom, your raj vich?
Fillum shooting is happening in this city and I am hearing about it
from neighbourers! Bade shram di gal hai!” He is saying, “Eddech
ki problem hai? Tussi shooting vekhni hai na… kal swere tyar raho.”
Whole day I am getting busy, phoning this one, that one, telling them
about superstar shooting. Next morning, I am getting up early in the
morning and calling my malish wali to do my malish. She is also doing
my waxing and eyebrows. Then I am washing my hairs, pressing my new
kadhai wala suit and getting ready. My He is wanting his usual
paranthas for breakfast but I am giving him bread and namkeen. Then
Shoki Paaji is sending his staff car. I am too excited even to eat and
am having just one sukha sadya toast and one glass of milk. My heart
is going dhak dhak just like Madhuri’s heart in “Beta”. Finally,
we are reaching and I am getting VIP place…just next to Mrs Khanna.
She and I are chatting about all stars we have seen. I am telling her
about star I was meeting in train. I am forgetting his name…he was
one of three rapists in “Roti, kapda aur makaan.” Finally,
superstars are coming on sets. Amitabh is looking too handsome. My He
is mobiling me just then. I am getting irritated. Ofo, kya musibat hai…pata
nahin hai main Amitji nu vekh rahin han? I am cutting off mobile
only. Then some confusion is happening. Director is looking worried.
We are coming to know that some actress is absent. Now what will
happen? Director is looking here and there. He is looking at me….and
now he is coming near me. He is saying to me, “Madame, have you
acted?” I am nodding my head. Of course, wasn’t I Heer’s saheli
in college drama? He is asking; “Can you do little acting for our
film madame?” My heart is swelling with joy…Mrs. Khanna is looking
red and yellow with anger. I am not being able to say any word so I am
nodding so hardly that my hairpins are falling out. He is saying,
“Then please, can you step down? We will like you to do one scene as
Amitji’s dying sister?” Parrots are flying out of my hand. Such
an insult to such a big fanny! No, Never! |
