Homoeopathic camp today

Mohali, March 22
The Association for Scientific Research in Homoeopathy will organise a free homoeopathic medical check-up camp tomorrow.
Dr Avtar Singh, president of the association, said the camp would be organised at the Lok Kalyan Kender at Gurdwara Ramgarhia Sahib, Phase IIIB1. The camp would start in the morning and go on till afternoon.

He said doctors from Patiala, Sangrur, Chandigarh and Mohali would check patients suffering from various diseases like arthritis, gout, rhinitis, diabetes, asthma, kidney stones, prostate enlargement and tumors.

A homoeopathic dispensary would be opened on the premises of the gurdwara for follow-up treatment of the patients and would function every Saturday.

Karan, Mandeep move up in tennis trials

Local boys Uday Karan Puniha in the under-14 section and Mandeep Yadav in the under-18 section, moved up on the first day of the AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament which began at the CLTA tennis stadium, Sector 10, here today. Tomorrow the qualifying rounds will end. The main draw rounds would begin from March 24.

198 children take part in athletic events

The House Owners Welfare Society, Phase V, organised the third athletic competition for children between the age of five years and 12 years.
Mr A.S. Shyan, general secretary of the society, said 198 children took part in the competition which was held at Green Field Public High School. The prizes were given away by Mr Kulwant Singh, president of the local municipal council.

Jesse Grewal on panel of golf teaching pros

Chandigarh’s top golf teaching professional Jesse Grewal has been selected to be part of a special programme for golf teaching professionals in India.
He has just returned from Italy where he along with Nonita Lall Qureshi from Delhi and Vijay Divecha from Bangalore assisted Dr Donato Di Ponziano, Vice-President, PGA of Europe, to compile the manual for golf professionals in India. The manual covers all aspects of the game and will be the base for a standardised teaching system in the country. The manual will also be translated in Hindi.

The programme has been sponsored by the Royal and Ancient of St Andrews and is a combined effort of the R and A, The PGA of Europe, the Indian Golf Union and the PGA of India. The three members attended the classes in bio-mechanics, technique of the golf swing, club-fitting, course maintenance held for the aspiring golf teaching professionals of Italy at the Scuola Nazionale Di Golf of the Italian Golf Federation at Rome.

There is a need for creating a national school or centre of golf in India and the main objective of this programme is to have this centre by the end of 2005 with its own trained teaching staff so that we do not have to depend on foreign coaches all the time.

Jesse Grewal is the coach of some top Indian golfers like Irina Brar, Gurbaaz Mann, Girish Virk, Ajitesh Sandhu, Jaskeerat Dullet, Gaganjit Bhullar,Fatehbir Dhaliwal, Rahul Bakshi and many others. According to Dr G.S. Kochhar, Chairman, Media and Publicity,Chandigargh Golf Club, Jesse Grewal teaches golf at the Chandigarh Golf Club and is the Director of the CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy.

Mohit to play in Mercedes golf final in Germany

Mohit Verma of Chandigarh will lead the Indian team to the Mercedes Trophy world golf final to be played in Stuttgart, Germany, in September .
Mohit won the first qualifier Mercedes Trophy tournament at DLF, Gurgaon, in February. And then in the all-India final at Pune on March 6 he clinched the Mercedes title to qualify for the world final, according to Dr G.S. Kochhar, Chairman, Media and Publicity, Chandigarh Golf Club.

Children’s sports meet

The House Owners Welfare Society, Phase V, organised a children’s sports meet at Green Field Public School here. Mr Kulwant Singh, president of the municipal council, inaugurated the meet. He also gave away prizes to the winners. As many as 198 children, including 75 girls, participated in the meet.

Auction of liquor vends allowed

The Election Commission of India today allowed the Chandigarh Administration to hold the auction of liquor vends in the city on March 26. The administration had sought the permission of the commission to hold the auction as the model code of conduct had come into force from February 29, when the poll to the Lok Sabha was announced.

The commission said the highest bidders should get vends. Also the bidding process be carried out in a transparent manner.

Sources in the administration said officially the policy would be announced tomorrow. However, it had been decided not to have the vends which function from tin sheds in thickly populated areas. This year 15 such vends would be re-located.

Licence making computerised

The Deputy Commissioner, Ms Satwanti Ahlawat, inaugurated the computerised system for making licences at the SDM office here today.
According to a press note, Ms Ahlawat stressed the need for computerisation in government offices for bringing transparency in their functioning. The SDM, Mr V.K. Dahiya, said the computerisation would help in prompt preparation of the learners licences, driving licences and registration certificates. The work of the renewal of the licences would be started here soon, he added.

135 vehicles challaned

The Mohali traffic police issued 135 challans on the first day of the special challan drive yesterday. Traffic in charge Inspector Jagjit Singh said 45 challans were issued for overspeeding, 55 to those driving two-wheelers without helmet.

Seven cars were impounded and 37 challans issued for jumping red lights, two for using for black film and three for not wearing seat belt. He further said two ASIs, 14 head constables and 34 constables as par of the traffic police team and additional 10 policemen had been put on traffic duty. In February, the traffic police had issued more than 300 challans, Mr Jagjit Singh said. The drive was conducted as part of the week-long celebrations of Traffic Rules Awareness and Education Week.

4 cops suspended for dereliction of duty

Panchkula, March 22
The SP, Mr Ranbir Sharma, today suspended four police personnel for dereliction of duty and enjoying the hospitality of an accused who is president of the Himachal unit of INTUC, Mr Amarjit Bawa, in Shimla.
The suspended policemen are ASI Neel Chand and constables Nirmal Singh, Dhani Ram and Jasmer Singh.

According to sources, the policemen had gone to Shimla to fetch two close associates of Bawa — Sukhpreet, alias Sukhi, and Paramjeet, alias Pammi — in a case registered by the local police in connection with the attack on Pinjore-based advocate S.K. Sisodia in Shimla a few months ago.

Sukhi and Pammi were in the custody of the Himachal police in other cases. But by the time the local police team reached Shimla, the duo was released on bail. It was alleged that the suspended policemen enjoyed the hospitality of Mr Bawa and stayed at his house in Shimla.
