Warning on fluid discharge from nose
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 12
An apparently minor ailment like watery discharge from the nose can be serious, and at times fatal, and should not be ignored. The warning was given by Dr M. K. Sobti, neurosurgeon and former head of neurosurgery at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, while addressing a press conference here today.

Dr Sobti said Jaswant Singh (52), a police officer living a healthy life, learnt his lesson the hard way. When Jaswant Singh noticed watery discharge coming out of his left nostril about two-and-half years ago, he ignored the same. He took medicine for common cold. However, his condition did not improve and the fluid continued to flow.

“One day he had a severe headache and his neck became stiff. He also developed high fever and later, lost consciousness. He was admitted to a private hospital where he was diagnosed of meningitis (infection of the brain). Despite treatment, the watery discharge continued to flow. When he consulted Dr Sobti, he was told that the watery discharge was not from the nose but was from the brain.

“Surgery was performed and the leak sealed with tissue and fat taken from the patient’s thigh and using biological glue.”
