Actor Akshay Kumar had a brief stay in the city this afternoon. Mr A.S. Bajwa, Chairman of the Shemrock Group of Schools, hosted a lunch for Akshay Kumar and director-producer Raj Kanwar. The film personalities were coming by road from Manali to catch the Chandigarh-Mumbai flight.

Officials of the Income Tax Department today conducted an intensive survey at a children's clothes-cum-accessories outlet, Rama Stores, in Sector 22 here today. The store is owned by a family member of the local BJP president, Mr Yash Pal Mahajan.

Incredible, but true. A father of six has allegedly eloped with a mother of two, taking the children along with them. Their affair was reportedly more than a year old. The cheated spouses - both residents of Sector 29 - have approached the police in the matter. The police says it is “looking into the matter.”

Chhat Bir zoo gets rare pheasants
Chhat Bir (Patiala), March 9
Four pairs of white-crested kalij pheasants, that have sickle-shaped tail feathers, were brought from Sarahn Pheasantry in Himachal Pradesh last night to Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park (Chhat Bir zoo) here. The pairs have been housed in separate cages in the aviary of the zoo to avoid fights among them. The zoo authorities disinfected the cages and also sprinkled water in these to maintain the appropriate temperature.

‘Umeed’ helps earn livelihood

“Umeed”, the project that brought a ray of hope for the children of Government Institute for Mentally Retarded in Sector 32 about two and half years back, has now become a source for livelihood for more than 25 children and an equal number of families from the economically poor section.

20 prison officers attend interaction course

More than 20 prison officers from Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, besides Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, are participating in a six-day “vertical interaction course” on “Human Rights Initiatives in Prisons”.

Poohla booked under NDPS Act

Chandigarh, March 9
Within hours after Majitha police arrested head of Nihang’s Tarna Dal Ajit Singh Poohla and later released him on bail, the Chandigarh police yesterday booked Poohla under the NDPS Act. He has been accused of growing poppy on a gurdwara land in Sector 39 here. His alleged accomplice, Jathedar Harjinder Singh, has been arrested. The police claims that it has started a hunt for Poohla. Acting on a secret information, the Sector 39 police raided the land adjacent to Gurdwara Nanak Sagar and found poppy crop on two plots totalling around four acres.

Two arrested for stealing
Chandigarh, March 9
With the arrest two persons, the Sector 39 police today claimed to have solved five cases of theft, which had taken place in the recent past. Malkiat Singh of Dadu Majra Colony and Jaspal of Dadu Majra village were arrested in connection with the five thefts and four television sets, a music system and other items were recovered from their possession, said the police.

One nabbed for bid to molest eight-year-old
Panchkula, March 9
The police today arrested Rajeev Kumar, a resident of Mansa Devi area, on the charge of attempting to outrage the modesty of an eight-year-old girl. According to sources, Rajeev, a small-time building contractor, lured the girl last night when she was playing in front of her house.

Two permanent members of the Chandigarh Club have moved a local court, alleging that 10 elected and two nominated members have enrolled more permanent members than the sanctioned strength. This has been done to gain advantage in the Club’s elections, scheduled for April 4, they have alleged. The court has issued a notice for March 12 to the respondents.

Yoga camp at CLTA stadium from March 13

A special Yoga camp will be conducted under the aegis of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association by Swami Adhyatmananda Ji of the Divine Life Society, Ahmedabad. Titled “From Yoga To Arogya”, the camp will be held from March 13 to 20 at the CLTA Tennis Stadium. It is for sportsmen, especially tennis players, and is also open for members of public in all age groups.
