Holi revellers paint city red
Chandigarh, March 8
Revellers, armed with water pistols and balloons, took to the streets on their bikes and cars to play Holi. They zipped around the city with enthusiastic shrieks of “Holi hai” mingled with din of trumpets. The presence of the police, especially along the geri route, was no dampener.

Kidnapper of two girls arrested
Chandigarh, March 8
Satpal, alias Raju, who had allegedly abducted two sisters aged 4 and 5 years on March 2 from Abheypur village, Panchkula, was arrested by the UT Police. Raju was later handed over to the Panchkula police. On March 3, the police had found the sisters from Kishengarh village (near the Sukhna lake). Police sources said after abducting the sisters, Raju had brought them to his jhuggi at Madrasi Colony, Bapu Dham, Sector 26. But when he came to know that the Chandigarh Police had been informed about the kidnapping by its counterpart in Panchkula, he abandoned the girls in Kishengarh and fled.

Three countries have approached the Indian Government with requests to train their respective police forces. While a high-level assessment team is leaving shortly for Ethiopia, requests from Bhutan and Sri Lanka are being considered.

100 Tribune employees donate blood

As many as 100 employees of The Tribune donated blood at a camp organised by the Tribune Employees Union to observe the International Women’s Day on the premises of The Tribune here today. It was the 17th consecutive blood donation camp and the second on the International Women’s Day to be organised by the union.

Women’s Day celebrated

Chandigarh, March 8
The Woman and Child Support Unit of the Chandigarh Police organised host of events to mark the International Women’s Day. It started in the morning with a road run and walk. More than 600 persons took part. This included children from different government and private schools.

Talks, discussions and competitions

Declamation contests, talks and poster making competition marked the International Women’s Day celebrations in various educational institutions in the city. A talk on ‘ Ground Reality of Women’s Plight in Modern Society’ was organised at Government College of Education , Sector 20, here.

Protest against J&K
daughter’s Bill
Chandigarh, March 8
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the local unit of the BJP Mahila Morcha organised a protest against the Bill introduced in the House of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly which says women from the state will lose their state subject rights if they marry outside the state. The morcha will launch a “Jan Jagran Abhiyan” throughout Chandigarh against the said Act.

University panel to check harassment against girls
Patiala, March 8
Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Swarn Singh Boparai constituted a five-member committee pertaining to violence and sexual harassment of women at workplace on the occasion of International Women’s Day here today. The committee will work for the security of girls students and women employees in the university.

Contractors demand land to build their houses
Mohali, March 8
The Private Construction Labour Contractors Association has demanded land for a separate residential colony for its members. Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Jaswant Singh Bhullar, president of the association, said about 90 per cent of the construction in the town had been carried out by contractors, but they themselves were houseless. He said their organisation had approached various political parties in this regard but no one had come to their help.

Taxi operators oppose passenger tax
Mohali, March 8
Taxi operators of the town have opposed the move of the Chandigarh Administration to impose road tax and passenger tax on tourist vehicles. The affected persons, who held a meeting at Rose Garden in Phase III B I here today, said they had formed a five-member committee to take up the issue with the authorities concerned.

A six-day training programme on “Human rights initiatives in prisons” began at the Institute for Correctional Administration here, which aims at improving human resources in jails. Delegates from several states are attending the programme, organised regularly by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD).

Unemployed youth commits suicide
Mohali, March 8
Harmandeep, a 25-year-old unemployed youth, allegedly committed suicide here last night. A resident of Sector 69, Harmandeep, was found dead in his room hanging from a ceiling hook.

The Department of Information Technology of Government College for Men, Sector 11, organised its annual function and farewell party today. In the fashion round, Aman Wadhan was declared Mr BCA and Kanwaljeet Singh Mr MSc.

Notice to Haryana on  ex-judge’s  security

A Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court comprising Mr Justice Amar Dutt and Mr Justice Surya Kant Sharma today issued notices to Haryana and others for March 19 on a petition filed by a retired Additional and Sessions Judge, Dr S.K. Kapoor. He was seeking direction to the state government to provide him and his family with security.

Indian players not under pressure, says Kirmani
Former wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani on Monday said that the forthcoming Indian cricket tour to Pakistan had been given extreme media hype. While the tour, arranged after many years, would be exciting, there was no pressure on the Indians and they would perform their best, he added. On the selection of the team for the Test matches, Kirmani said it would be done after the Ranji finals. Talking of the problems faced by the fans in obtaining visas for Pakistan, Kirmani said in a lighter vein that the presence of the Indian team was more important than the spectators.
