BJP dubs Panthers Party, Cong as foes
M.L. Kak

Jammu, March 6
The state unit of the BJP, which has decided to contest four out of six Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir, is aiming its guns against the Congress and the Panthers Party instead of the National Conference and the PDP.

At least in the Jammu region, which has two Lok Sabha seats, the BJP was treating the Congress and the Panthers Party as its main political rivals. It had prepared a plan to target these two organisations for their failure to fulfill their commitments made to the people during the 2002 Assembly poll despite being partners in the coalition government.

The BJP spokesman, Dr Hari Om, said, “We shall expose the politics of deceit pursued by the Congress and the Panthers’ Party during the past over one and a half years .”

He added, “The Congress had sought voters’ support in the previous Assembly poll on the promise of giving Chief Minister’s chair to a person from Jammu, to implement the Wazir Committee recommendations, and of setting up a delimitation commission.”

Dr Hari Om said, “The Congress had bagged 20 seats and the Panthers Party four seats”. He said neither somebody from Jammu was installed as Chief Minister, nor the Wazir Committee report was implemented nor a delimitation commission was set up”. In addition to this, the Congress promise of setting up regional development boards and end to prolonged discrimination of the people of the Jammu region remained unfulfilled, he added.

The BJP was all set to take on the Panthers Party chief, Prof Bhim Singh, whose pledge to secure statehood status for Jammu had “turned out to be only a hollow slogan.”

A couple of senior Congress leaders admitted to the party’s failure in fulfilling important promises made to the people. They said, “We do not have sufficient material to counter the BJP salvos during the pre-poll campaign.”

They said, “We have plans to counter the BJP campaign with development and improvement in the security environment that has taken place in the state during the past over one and a half years.”

However, the BJP has started attacking the coalition government by holding it responsible for what it called pursuing “pro-militant policy in the light of the incentives it has offered to those rebels who surrender.” Here again the BJP had targeted the Congress on the plea that the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Mangat Ram Sharma, who was a senior Congress leader, had presided over the cabinet meeting which approved the incentive package for those militants who had surrendered.

Eight militants killed

Srinagar, March 6
Nine persons, including eight militants, were killed and two civilians injured in Jammu and Kashmir overnight, an official spokesman said today.

Acting on a tip-off, the security forces cordoned off a village near Sangam in south Kashmir yesterday to nab militants.

However, the security personnel came under heavy fire when they were about to storm a house.

In the night-long gunbattle, four militants were killed. Four AK rifles, 10 magazines, five UBGL and 259 rounds were seized from the slain militants.

In Gambear Mughlan of Rajouri district last night, the security forces gunned down a Lashker-e-Toiba area commander. One AK rifle, four magazines, 59 rounds and one wireless set were seized from his possession.

Three more militants were killed by the security forces in a fierce encounter at Gali in the Bala Kote sector of Poonch district.

The spokesman said a bullet-riddled body of Javed Ahmad Kachroo was recovered at Mohmin Dangi Bijbehara village in South Kashmir district of Anantnag today.

A civilian, Arif Maqbool Bhat, was shot at and critically wounded by militants at Machpora Handwara. He has been admitted to a hospital.

Militants fired upon a patrol party at Ushkara village in Baramula district today. The fire was returned and in the shootout, a 12th class student, Nasir Ahmad Bhat, was injured. However, the villagers, who took to streets, alleged that the security forces opened fire on the boy without any provocation. — UNI

Strategy to prevent terror attacks

Jammu, March 6
A multi-pronged strategy to prevent terror attacks in Jammu has been put in place especially after the abortive bid by a Lashker-e-Toiba ultra to storm the high security Central Jail here last Wednesday that left six persons, including three policemen, dead.

The steps include mounting vigil throughout the city and intensification of patrolling, strengthening of already existing nakas of the city and mobilisation of additional two companies of forces to carry out searches and cordons on the basis of specific intelligence inputs, Minister of State for Home Abdul Rehman Veeri told the Legislative Council today.

He said flying squads established in the city were being mobilised in a coordinated manner so as to undertake surprise checking of vehicles coming to Jammu through various routes round the clock.

Mr Veeri said that static deployment and security around vital installations had also been senitised to meet the new challenges. — PTI
