Chandigarh, March 4
Nourin Midha of Panchkula, not yet 11 years old, has established herself as a promising skater in the past six years. Nourin, a student of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, Panchkula, is supported by her parents in her pursuit to go all out in skating. She has won laurels both in speed and roller hockey. Recently, in the Haryana state championship held at Yamunanagar, she won a gold medal both in rink I and rink II and a silver medal in road races in the 8-10 age group. Last year, she had won a gold medal in the under-12 section and another gold medal in the under-12 section in the CBSE North Zone skating championship.
Nourin has excelled in various tournaments, be it the National School Games held at Moga in 1999, then the National School Games in 2000 in the under-11 section. In the national skating championship for CBSE schools held at Faridabad in 2002, she stood fifth. In the National School Games held in 2002 at New Delhi, Nourin secured the fourth place.
She said the speed event fascinated her the most but later, on the advise of her coach, Mr A.D. Sharma, of the Haryana Sports Department, she also took part in roller hockey and enabled her team to win medals in various events.
She practises at the Bhavan Vidyalaya skating rink in Sector 15 and often goes to another skating club in Sector 16 to have better exposure. Nourin says the skates nowdays are very costly and the government should allow subsidised equipment for skaters who wish to choose this sport as a career.
Nourin said Haryana had good representation in the national team and its eves had cornered glory in national meets. She said they had access to four skating rinks in Panchkula. She daily devotes more than three houirs to skating.
She is preparing hard for the forthcoming national skating championship, to be organised by the Roller Skating Federation of India in May.
