PAU to sell 4 new seed varieties
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 3
Seeds of ‘‘Pusa sugandha’’ which can yield 18.5 quintals of fine rice per acre, ‘‘Moti,’’ a male sterile, wilt-resistant hybrid cotton seed, and COJ-89 and SG-99, new varieties of sugarcane and groundnut, respectively, will be on sale at a two-day kisan mela starting here tomorrow.

Dr Amrik Singh Sandhu, Director, Extension Education, PAU, said the main focus during the mela would be on making farmers aware of organic farming.

He said the farmers would also be told about new shade cards that prevented the excessive fertilisation of crops. The colour of the leaf blade when matched with the shade card would give the amount of urea required by the crop. Benefits of the zero tillage technique would also be demonstrated. The technique could cut down the cost of production drastically, he said.

Various departments are gearing up for the exhibition which would also be viewed by Justice O.P. Verma, Punjab Governor. Posters, charts, models and other exhibits depicting the year-round findings would be put up.

The Department of Forestry will be focussing on various agro-systems and cropping patterns to be adopted for cultivation of poplar, sheesham, acacia, dek and other fodder as well as cash crops.

The Department of Family Resource Management will focus on consumer protection rights.

There will be charts for helping consumers buy wisely and not get duped. Various time-saving kitchen tools will also be displayed. Cooking in solar cookers will also be demonstrated.
