640 kids examined at medical camp

Over 640 children were examined at medical check-up camps at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 38 (West), and Government Senior Secondary School, Dhanas. A team of doctors from General Hospital, Sector 16, and Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, besides the Directorate of Family Welfare and Health Care India, provided medical expertise.

Vaccination drive

The Health Department has launched a campaign to vaccinate the kids.
According to a press note issued here on Wednesday 1,005 children have been immunised against BCG,903 and 824 against the DPT.

Chandigarh State Games likely from October 22

Chandigarh, March 3
The first Chandigarh State Games will be tentatively held from October 22 to 24. This was decided at an executive committee meeting of the Chandigarh Olympic Association (COA) held here today. The meeting was chaired by Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, president of the Chandigarh Olympic Association.

The opening and closing ceremonies of the State Games, in which competitions will be conducted in about 20 disciplines, will be held at the Sector 7 athletic stadium. The meeting decided that various state associations would conduct competitions in their own disciplines at convenient venues. In this connection, today’s meeting decided to convene a general house meeting of the association in August where the exact schedule of the games would be finalised.

It was also decided that the medal winners in the senior category in various international and national-level tournaments would be honoured during the Games.

Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi informed the meeting that the allotment of land by the Chandigarh Administration for the proposed Chandigarh Olympic Bhavan was on the anvil. Once the land was handed over to the association the construction of the bhavan would be taken up in right earnest, it was stated.

City lad attends seminar on choi kwang do

Sixteen-year-old Ankit Goel has returned from Atlanta (USA) after attending an international seminar on choi kwang do. Ankit, a student of Class XI (commence stream) in Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, is a black belt. At the age of 14, he became an assistant instructor. He was the only person from the city to get training from Grand Master Kwang Jo Chi of the USA at the seminar.

Sharing his experiences, Ankit said he owed his achievement to the rigorous training he had received from his instructor, Suresh Kumar Dogra, a second degree black belt, and chief instructor Sudhir Kumar, a third degree black belt.

Ankit said in Atlanta, choi kwang do was very popular and traditional martial art like taekwondo was losing popularity. He said choi kwang do was a unique and innovative martial art that offered its students a comprehensive system to learn effective self-defence. These days, martial art is becoming increasing popular as it helps in the fields of bio-mechanics, kinesiology and psycho-neutrology.

Ankit said he has benefited immensely from this art. His daily schedule includes four to five hours of practice at the Community Club, Sector 44.

City fencers win bronze at national meet

Chandigarh, March 3
City fencers bagged the bronze medal in sabre event in the XIth Junior National Fencing Championship held at Imphal.
The team that played in Sabre and Epee also qualified for the first Youth National games to be held in May in Bangalore. Presently a coaching camp is in progress at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, for preparing the UT team for the Senior National Fencing championship to be held in Cochin from March 23.

Mr S.P. Sharma, secretary, Chandigarh Fencing Association, said Ramesh Rajput and Gaurav Sharma were training the team.

The final team will be announced on March 20.

Hockey match: A test match between Indian Junior hockey Xi and Malaysian Junior hockey XI was organised at the Hockey stadium, Sector 42, Chandigarh. This match will be played under the aegis of the Chandigarh Sports Council, UT Administration, at 4.30 pm. The UT Administrator, Justice O.P. Verma, will be the chief guest.

PUDA team to issue licences

A separate team comprising officials of the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) has been formed to issue licences to private colonisers.
Mr Amardeep Singh Hira, general secretary of the Punjab Colonisers and Builders Association, said in a press note here today that the team shall be assigned the job of issuing licences and also to look after the problems faced by colonisers while procuring such licences on a priority basis.

The association thanked the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, for streamlining the process.

Drive against overloaded rickshaws

A drive will be launched next week against overloaded rickshaws ferrying children to school, the Chandigarh Administration announced today. Under the rickshaw bylaws, four children can be seated in a rickshaw. Parents and school authorities have been asked to ensure compliance with the bylaws. TNS
