Promote education in rural areas, says Dr Pathak

Doraha, March 1
Dr K.N. Pathak, Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, today asserted that students, teachers and society should face local challenges by thinking globally and acting locally. He stressed the need for promoting the rural segment of society for this. He was addressing students of the local Guru Nanak National College at a convocation function.

He said selfless service to humanity should be the greatest task before any educational institution. The Vice-Chancellor congratulated the management of the college for successfully running the institution in a rural area.

Degrees were conferred on 13 honours graduates, 101 arts and 39 commerce graduates. As many as 45 annual examination and 125 house examination prizes were also presented.

Six students were on the roll of honour: Amritpal Singh of BA III for discus throw, Gurpreet Singh of BA III for 110m hurdles, Balraj Singh of BA III for high jump, Hanspal Singh of BA II for hockey, Karamjit Kaur of BA III for boxing, and Sunny Bhardwaj of BA II for attending the Republic Day NCC camp.

Fifty-one college colours were also presented to students for commendable performance in various sports, cultural events and social welfare activities.

Student editors best NCC cadets and NSS volunteers were also honoured. Mr Jaswant Singh Gill, Principal, presented the annual report.

Lecture on America

LUDHIANA: Prof A.A. Mutalik-Desai from Dharwad, Karnataka, a scholar of American literature, addressed students of the Department of English of the local Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College on “Beginnings of America and American literature.” His discourse focused on the historical trans-American influences and the evolution of American literature.

Cultural function

LUDHIANA: The Cultural Society of the local Malwa Central College of Education for Women, Civil Lines, organised a cultural function on Monday. Folk dances, skits, poems and songs were presented on the occasion. Prof K.K. Bhatia, former Director of the Malwa Institute of Professional Studies and Services, presided over the function. Ms Satpal Grewal and Ms Navneet Kaur from the faculty also presented their items.

Inter-college contests

LUDHIANA: The Music and Dramatics Club of the local Kamla Lohtia Sanatan Dharam College organised an inter-college competition for geet, ghazal and Punjabi folk song in the newly built auditorium of the college on Monday. Principal B.D. Budhiraja said such contests brought out the hidden talents in students.

The results: Geet: Daljeet of GN Khalsa College for Women first, Saurabh Jain of Kamla Lohtia SD college second, and Gurmeet and Rajwant of GCB third. Ghazal: Hema Sharma of Ramgarhia Girls College first, Rahul Dhawan of the Government College for Boys second, Liza and Tulika Sharma of Kamla Lohtia SD College third. Punjabi folk song: Amanpreet of the Government College for Boys first, Manpreet of the GN Khalsa College for Women second, Gaurav Sharma of Kamla Lohtia SD College third.

The overall trophy was won by the Government College for Boys and the GN Khalsa College for Women.

Medical check-up

LUDHIANA: An eye and dental check-up camp for students has been on at Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women since February 14. Doctors from Mata Gujri Hospital, Akal Garh Gurdwara, have been examining the students. Blood groups are also being tested. Students were also made aware of preventive measures against diseases.

Alumni Association

Doraha: A meeting of the Alumni Association of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, was organised on the college campus on Sunday. Prof J.S. Grewal, Head of the Post graduate Department of Punjabi and convener of the Alumni Association welcomed old students of the college. Various resolutions were passed by the association including that the Alumni Association would give Rs 2,500 every year to help five needy students of the college.

Little Angels Playway School celebrates annual day

Little Angels Playway School, BRS Nagar, celebrated its annual day and prize distribution function here today.
Tiny tots were awarded medals and certificates. They were also honoured as ‘‘Best Angel’’, ‘‘Angel Glory’’ and ‘‘Angel Excellent of the Year’’. Those who were awarded were Yashmilan, Armaan, Manya, Priyanka, Samyukta, Kritika and Bani. Prizes were also given for their performance in academics. Trophies were also given to the best parents.

Students of nursery and KG classes performed butterfly dance in bright, colourful dresses. They also depicted a marriage party dance in form of an item titled ‘Chuhe ki baraat’. Tiny tots came in fancy dress characterised as bride, model, ice cream seller, policeman and joker. Jesleen and Chukanshu, both students of Classes II and III presented a thrilling dance on the song ‘Mein Wari’. Saumya and Prabhneet were the star performers . Last item was the dance performance by teachers of the school.

Mr Deepak Jain, director of a hotel, was the chief guest. He was welcomed by Mr Sanjeev Johri, Director of the school. Ms Sandhya Johri, Principal, conducted the show.

Farewell: A farewell function was organised at Sanmati Vimal Jain Public School, Kacha Malak Road Jagraon, on Saturday. Harshpreet of Class 7 delivered welcome speech and students of Class 8 presented a play on dowry. Compliments were given to teachers and students. Principal Rattan Singh wished best of luck to outgoing class.

Science day: National Science Day was celebrated in Government High School, Salem Tabri, Ludhiana here on Saturday. Headmaster Ranjit Singh spoke on the life of C.V. Raman. Mr Ramesh Kumar, science teacher, conducted a quiz competition for Class 10 students.

Farewell party: A farewell party for outgoing Classes 10 and 10+2 was arranged at Everest Public Senior Secondary School on Saturday. A colourful programme was presented by junior students. The Principal of the school advised the students to cultivate the spirit of leadership and work hard.

Harbhajan Mann:
Punjabi singer Harbhajan Mann will perform at the cultural programme being organised in the memory of the founder-president of the college, Dr Ishwar Singh, by the management, Principal, staff, students and the Alumni Association of the college on Tuesday. Sarabjit Mangat, singer and folk dancer, will also regale the guests and students. Surinder Bachan, renowned music director, will be honoured on the occasion.

Crescendo from today

Ludhiana, March 1
Crescendo, a two-day cultural and literary extravaganza of Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GGNIMT) will begin on Tuesday. Mr Ashwini Sekhri, Minister for Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Punjab, will inaugurate the festival. Bhagwant Mann, a renowned TV comedian, and Sarabjeet Cheema, well-known Punjabi singer, will also attend the function. Teams from about 35 colleges from all over Punjab will participate. More than 20 literary, professional, cultural and fine arts events will be organised during the festival. The fine arts events will include flower arrangement, sketching, collage making, mehndi and rangoli. The cultural events will include duet song, western group dance, choreography, Punjabi folk dance and fashion show. There will be also be events like dumb charades, corporate quiz, group discussion, bindaas bol, sell it, strategy war, mock press conference, system analysis and, design and debugging. Harbhajan Mann, will preside over the prize distribution function on March 3. A souvenir will also be released to commemorate the occasion.

Infovision: The Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Gujarkahna Campus, Model Town, Ludhiana, hosted national-level students’ competition - INFOVISION 2004 and a seminar on ‘e-business’ here on Sunday. The competition and seminar were organised under the aegis of the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) — students chapter of GNIMT. Students of several colleges participated in various competitions like software development, website designing, debugging, computer quiz, extempore and paper presentation. Dr C.M. Bahl, Director, Department of Computer Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the chief guest. He also gave away prizes to the winners.

Exhibition: Students of GRD Academy organised a science exhibition on Saturday to mark the National Science Day. More than 100 models on non-conventional sources of energy, revolution made by transistor, balanced diet, periscope, musical bell, solar cell, control of air pollution and computer networking were displayed. Sahil and Ajinder won the first prize, while Khushpreet and Amarpal stood second. Third position went to Simar and Manjinder. Mr Kartar Singh, Director and Principal, inaugurated the exhibition. — OC

Ranks in BBA exams: Sumiti Chopra and Nidhi Sood, both students of Institute of Management Studies (IMS), have won second and fourth ranks in the BBA examination conducted by the Punjab Technical University, respectively, this year. Sumiti has obtained 81.5 per cent marks while Nidhi has got 79.81 per cent marks. — OC

Best student award: Shaily Walia, a student of Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology, has been adjudged the best student of students’ chapter of the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) of Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT). The award has been given for her overall excellent performance and leadership exhibited in ISTE activities and competitions during 2003. — OC

Inaugurated: A computer centre was inaugurated at the Child Development Centre, BRS Nagar, recently. Ms Manjit Dhillon, Dean, College of Home Science, Punjab Agricultural University, was the chief guest. She said children could learn stories, rhymes and various other concepts of shapes, colours, fruits and vegetables from computer-aided programmes. Dr Paramjit Nanda, professor of Human Development, spoke on new concepts of confidence building and personality development of children through art, music and plays. Dr Harbans Singh, Director, Child Development Centre, was present on the occasion. — OC

Sutlej Club elections: Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner president of the Sutlej Club, announced that the elections to the new executive body of the club would be held on March 28 on the club premises. The detailed programme for the elections would be issued separately, he added. In the annual general meeting of the club held on Sunday evening under the chairmanship of Mr Verma, the audited balance sheet for 2002-2003 was also approved after detailed discussions. — OC

Lawyers get possession of chambers

Ludhiana, March 1
City lawyers today got the physical possession of chambers. Path of Guru Granth Sahib and the Ramayana were performed at the chambers complex. Lawyers were seen congratulating one another.

Mr Partap Singh Bajwa, PWD Minister, was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bajwa said commitments made by the Chief Minister would be honoured. He gave the credit for the chambers to the Congress government. He assured that the lawyers would get cooperation from his department in future also.

Earlier, Mr Bajwa, the District and Sessions Judge, Mr Baldev Singh, MLA Malkiat Singh Dakha, a former minister, Mr Maheshinder Singh Grewal, Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon were given warm welcome by the bar association president, Mr Balwinder Goel.
