Zoysa leads Lanka to dramatic win
Colombo, February 29 In reply to Australia’s modest 198 for seven, Sri Lanka won with 2.1 overs to spare after Russel Arnold (23 not out) and Zoysa shared in an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 66. Left-arm seamer Zoysa grabbed three wickets for 34 with the ball in the morning and followed up with a sparkling innings of 47 not out from 42 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes. Zoysa and Arnold saved the hosts after they had slumped to 136 for seven in the 35th over. Australia, who rested four key players after clinching the series on 3-1 struggled in the morning having won the toss and opted to bat. Allrounder Andrew Symonds top-scored for the visitors with a 48-ball 40, sharing a 76-run stand for the seventh wicket with tailender Brad Hogg, who finished on 35 not out. Off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, playing his 229th match, lifted his career tally of one-day international wickets to 350, taking two for 35 from nine overs. Sri Lanka started badly, losing Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu early on, before Kumar Sangakkara fought back with a scintillating 41-ball 37.

Fourth day's play washed out Bulawayo, February 29 Captains Heath Streak of Zimbabwe and Habibul Bashar of Bangladesh were to confer about whether to agree that a result was not possible with only one more day’s play left. An agreement would lead to the match being abandoned, subject to approval by the referee. If that happens, Zimbabwe will have won the two-match series 1-0 with one match drawn, having beaten Bangladesh in Harare by 183 runs. Both the first and second scheduled days were washed out and only three hours of play were possible yesterday, when Bangladesh, having been put into bat, were intent on survival with the score 88 for five wickets after 37.1 overs. At one stage they were 64 without loss.

North, West evenly
placed in Duleep Trophy Dharamsala, February 29 When North came in for their second essay, left handed opener Gautam Gambhir not only scored a priceless unbeaten century (111 n.o) but also moved a step closer to stake a claim to a place in the Indian Test team in the near future. Self belief is quite a key ingredient in any success recipe and it was this quality that gleamed the most as the Delhi southpaw, widely considered to be fringe player for the past couple of seasons, held the innings together with an impressive knock which had flair and character in equal measure. That the youngster had talent was always an undisputed fact and what he proved today was that he had heart for a battle too. This proved to be a potent combination as he steered North out of troubled waters with a knock which turned out to be an outstanding statement of his ability and temperament. Resuming from 17 for 1, North lost Pankaj Dharmani when the Patiala batsman was looking to consolidate his innings. Dharmani lunged forward to smother the spin on a Romesh Pawar delivery but got some wood on his forward defensive shot and was gleefully snapped up by substitute Akash Christian at silly point. Skipper Dinesh Mongia, of whom much was expected, seemed to be a man in a hurry and instead of concentrating on grafting a big innings aimed at hitting the ball over the top but holed out at covers. At 79 for 4, West had got a foot into the door and threatened to yank it open but were thwarted by a timely 44 run fifth wicket partnership between Gambhir and Sangram Singh. In the first session of play, credit must be given to the West bowlers who bowled within their limits, exploited the conditions aptly and, like in the first innings, exposed the brittleness of the top order. As wickets fell regularly at one end, Gambhir lowered guard and played the role of sheet anchor to near perfection in the process carrying his bat through the innings. He played a well organised knock that had class written all over it and the youngster must be ruing the fact that both the selectors Syed Kirmani and Kiran More were not at hand to watch him as both had left the venue yesterday evening enroute to Kolkata. For most part on his innings he essayed some pleasant drives with the natural grace and ease of a left hander and went on to complete his century with an exquisite cover drive off Sairaj Bahutule.

Vijaykumar wins as TVS riders dominate Chandigarh, February 29 C Vijaykumar swept the Indian experts group A to win the over all honours in the meet which also served as the first leg of the National Motocross Championship 2004. Driving fast and furious he retained the title he won here last year and kept the honour intact as the current national champion. In the intermediate class, which was only for privateers and no team entries, Revat Dhillon, riding for the Chandigarh Motor Sports Association, impressed the spectators and the experts alike with his skills. A professional show jumper in the USA, he also gave two demonstrations of his jumping skills. The tough fight between TVS and Yamaha riders did not come up as Team TVS riders had the upper hand through out the day. They rode to victory in five events while Team Yamaha had to be content with title in only one category. The only woman rider of the event, 19-year-old Jahnavi Upadhyay of Jaipur failed to ride to a podium finish in the Indian novice group D category. Chandan KP of Team TVS finished first while Wasim Khan of Team Yamaha was second. Deepak John of Team TVS finished third. The results of the Indian experts (Indian motorcycles class group B 2 stroke 80cc upto 150cc) were withheld as team Yamaha filed a protest. It was also the most exciting race of the competition as Sayed Eathasham took an early lead and maintained it to win the moto 2 race. C Vijaykumar, who was in the fifth place at one time, rode brilliantly to overcome other riders, including 13-year-old Karan Kadam of Team Yamaha. Kadam held off the defending champion for quite a while before his inexperience showed as Vijaykumar overtook him on a bend and then wrested the second place from another Yamaha rider. He also closed the gap between him and Eathasham in the closing laps. The top riders took the double and triple jumps with panache, staying in control and leaving the spectators spellbound. Vijaykumar needed a second-place finish to win the over all honours. He had won the moto 1, thus garnering maximum points. Chandigarh has been a happy hunting ground for Vijaykumar as well as Team TVS.
