The city today proudly witnessed the grand opening of the biggest meet of surgeons ever held in this part of the region with more than 1,000 delegates from all over the world attending the sixth National Conference of Endoscopic Surgery. The three-day long conference has been organised by the Department of Surgery of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital and the Indian Association of Gastro Intestinal Endo Surgeons (IAGES).
It is through zeal and efforts of Dr Kuldip Singh, Professor of Surgery in DMCH, secretary of Indian Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of India and organising secretary of the conference that the event has brought to Ludhiana as many as 25 international and Indian surgeons, pioneer in various techniques of laparoscopic surgery to present their works and to give live demonstration of key hole surgery on various parts of body.
In the past 14 years India has become a place, where the largest number of laparoscopic surgeries are performed and this is being recognised all over the world.
This method, developed by Dr Philippe Mourret from France means no big cuts, no pain, short stay in the hospital, less complications and less cost.
The conference opened today morning in the presence of national and international faculty in the jam-packed Dumra Auditorium. Mr Philippe Mourret, known as father of laparoscopic surgery and the first surgeon to perform laparoscopic operation in world, Dr K. Ravindarnath, president, IAGES, Dr Daljit Singh, Principal, DMCH, Dr Kuldeep Singh, organising secretary of the conference and Dr Sandeep Puri, Medical Superintendent DMCH were among those present on the occasion.
Dr K. Ravindranath, the chief guest inaugurated the event by lighting a lamp. The welcome address was delivered by Dr Daljit Singh who said it was a great moment for DMCH as such a prestigious event had been organised on its premises. “The best way for a surgeon to equip himself with highest levels of knowledge is by learning from a master and those attending this conference will be fortunate to get such an opportunity”, said Dr Daljit Singh. He hoped that the event would go a long way in spreading the art of laparoscopy for the benefit of ailing humanity.
In his inaugural address, Dr Kuldeep Singh introduced the foreign faculty and threw light on the programme of the conference. Dr K. Ravindranath said in the past 11 years IAGES had progressed in every possible manner and currently had 1,380 members registered with it and talked about the achievement of IAGES.
The first day of conference was marked by more than 30 laparoscopic surgeries, performed free of cost, in the most modern OTs of DMCH by world renowned surgeons on various patients who had specially got registered for the workshop. The live telecast of the operations was shown to delegates on big screen at Dumra Auditorium and the delegates not only learnt about different operative techniques from masters of laparoscopic surgery but also clarified their doubts from the performing surgeons
The eminent international surgeons included Luc Lemens from Belgium, Russell Stitz from Australia, Michael Lie from Hong Kong, Prof Mac Mohan from UK, Prof Peter Goh, Dr Zoltan Szabo from USA, Dr Abe Fingerhut from France, Dr Mangeshikar, Dr Prakash Trivedi from Mumbai.
The president of the International Federation of Laparoscopic Surgery, Prof Dr Jaques Perissat, President of European Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons, Sir Alfred Cushchieri, president of Asian Federation of Laparoscopic Surgery, Dr Jasmi Yakub and Prof Yama Kawa from Japan will be the star attractions of the event.
