Congress on American studies

Ludhiana, February 18
The 36th annual congress of the Indian Association of American Studies (IAAS) will be held at Punjabi University, Patiala, from February 26.
This was stated by Dr T.S. Anand, president of the association and head of the postgraduate department of English, GGN Khalsa College, here today. He said the annual conclave of the Americans would deliberate on a variety of themes including ‘Environment and American literature’, ‘Indo-US economic relations’, ‘US foreign policy in Asia-Pacific region’, ‘Trends in American drama’ and ‘Multi-disciplinary dimensions of American literature.

Dr Anand said nearly 150 scholars drawn from the disciplines of literature, politics, economics and history would make their presentations. Notable scholars and intellectuals who would prominently figure in the deliberations would include Dr D.S. Maini, Prof M.L. Raina, Prof Som P. Ranchan and Prof B.S. Dahia. The American dramatist, Ms Laurie Susan, would deliver the key-note address. Ms Miriam Carvella, first secretary, American Embassy, New Delhi, would also attend the occasion with a small contingent of American scholars. The panel discussion would focus on the contemporary American literature and contemporary American politics.

Colourful show by kids

Ludhiana, February 18
The annual day and prize distribution function of the nursery section of Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, was celebrated here today.
Tiny tots came dressed in colourful attires and presented a gala show. The programme began with a welcome speech, followed by a shabad. A boogie item was presented in which children gave performances on Punjabi, Hindi and Punjabi pop numbers.

Little girls dressed in ghagras and cholis presented a Rajasthani dance. An action song was presented by students. The programme concluded with a giddha and a bhangra.

Mr Jagat Singh, Secretary of the school managing committee was the chief guest and gave prize to the winners. Mr Jagjit Kaur Jagdev, in charge of the nursery section, and Mr R.S. Gill, Principal, were present on the occasion.

Lok Adalat today

Mandi Ahmedgarh, February 18
Mr Joginder Singh, Executive Magistrate and Sub-Registrar at the local sub-tehsil office has informed that Dr Indu Malhotra, SDM, Maler-kotla, would hold a Lok Adalat at Nathumajra village tomorrow. Grievances of residents of Akbarpur Chhanna, Umaidpur and Nathumajra would be heard and redressed. OC
