No lady doctor at Vande Mataram camp

Ghaziabad, February 12
Mismanagement marked the inaugural day of the Central Government Scheme for pregnant women ‘Vande Matram’, which was formally opened by District Magistrate Santosh Kumar Yadav in Sahibabad. A large number of women, who had come from Hindon, had to return, as there were no lady doctor available.

Being the very first day, there were some inconveniences to women, said Dr Anusudya Tyagi, president of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society of India. Dr Lalita Ticku’s clinic in Shyam Park extension in Hindon had been approved for this scheme by the cooperation of the society. The announcement for the camp had been made by the Health Department. The pregnant women who had come to the camp were told that lady doctor would be available in the evening. The women had to return empty handed from the centre.

Dr Tyagi said that it had been claimed that all needed facilities for pregnant women and mothers would be made available at the centre. The specialist lady doctor comes to the centre in the evening, said a chemist running a shop adjacent to the Vande Matram Centre.

When contacted, the Chief Medical Officer, Dr S. P. Singh said the centres, about which ladies have any complaints, will be changed.

Guru Nanak Khalsa record thumping win

New Delhi, February 12
Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Yamuna Nagar defeated American College, Madurai 6-0, after leading by 2-0 at half time, in the Nehru Champion Colleges Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Thursday.

Jatinder Kumar opened the account in the eighth when he converted a penalty corner and scored the second goal too, in the 21st minute, converting another penalty corner.

Harinder Saini went on a scoring spree in the second half, knocking in three goals in a row while Sukhwinder completed the tally.

St. Joseph College, Bangalore trounced Youth Affairs and Adventure Sports, LNIPE, Gwalior 4-0. Dennis scored the first goal in the 12th minute while Varun Chinnappa struck home the second and fourth goals. In between, Bipin Mandanna scored the third goal.

In the third match, Khalsa College, Patiala defeated Rourkela Municipal College, Rourkela 5-0.

Jatin Kumar (2), Rajinder Singh (2) and Gurvinder Singh were the goal-getters.

Friday’s fixtures: Guru Nanak Khalsa vs St. Xavier’s, Ranchi (11.45 am); Khalsa College, Patiala vs Vivekanand College, Kolhapur (1.45 pm); College of Arts and Education, Annamali vs Rourkela Municipal College, Rourkela (3.30 pm)—Shivaji Stadium.

Hansraj School move into semis in inter-school tourney

A fine all-round display by Sachin Rathi (48 and 3 for 21) and a dashing knock by Onant Jai Singh (69, 8x4) helped Hansraj Model School, Punjabi Bagh beat St. Marks School, Janakpuri by 40 runs and enter the semi-final of the third Ganga International Under-17 Inter-School Cricket Tournament at the Ganga School ground.

Scores: Hansraj School: 204 for 4 in 30 overs (Onant Jai Singh 69, Anmol Sharma 44, Sachin Rathi 44, Aditya 2 for 14).

St. Marks School: 164 all out in 29 overs (Harsh 44, Aditya 40, Sachin Rathi 3 for 21, Anmol 2 for 21, Kartik Bhatiya 2 for 14).

Orient Craft win

Orient Craft defeated Speed Express by 49 runs in the eighth Suntan Cup Cricket Tournament at the Siri Fort complex.

Scores: Orient Craft: 189 for 6 in 25 overs (Masjid Ali 76 n o, Manoj Sharma 46 n o, Pardeep Jha 44, Jetender 2 for 11).

NTPC defeated Business Standard by two wickets in the Teri Cup Cricket Tournament at the Sri Venkateshwara College ground, Dhaula Kuan.

Salwan Boys lift cricket title

Devastating bowling spells by Anant Marichi (3 for 25) and Darshan Kajania (3 for 29) helped Salwan Boys School defeat Rohtak Road Gymkhana by eight wickets and lift the seventh R R Gymkhana Inter-School Under-16 Cricket Tournament for the R P Jain Trophy at the Bharat Nagar ground.

Shobhit Kaushik and Anant Marichi were adjudged the best bowlers while Sagar Midda got the best all-rounder award. Yogesh of Salwan Boys was declared the man of the tournament. Salwan scored 135 for 2 in 24 overs. And R R Gymkhana scored 134 all out in 37 overs.

Wrestlers felicitate Malhotra

A delegation of Indian Style Wrestling Association, led by its president Ramashray Yadav, called on All-India Council of Sports president Vijay Kumar Malhotra on Thursday and felicitated him to mark his 50-year association with wrestling. The wrestlers tied a turban on Mr Malhotra and garlanded him.

The delegation appreciated the work being done by Mr Malhotra in promoting indigenous games, especially Indian Style Wrestling and Archery.

Mr Malhotra assured the delegation of all assistance from the Government in promoting traditional wrestling akharas.

Mr Malhotra said akharas are the nursery of Indian wrestlers and from where they graduate to modern mats and bring laurels to the country from international competitions.

The delegation comprised other prominent former wrestlers like Roshan Lal, Guru Raghunandan Bramachari, Haji Yusuf, Khalifa Bichhu, Khalifa Zahid, Khalifa Rehman and Nauroz.

Western dethrone Southern in Railway tennis

Western Railway dethroned reigning champions Southern Railway 2-0 to annex the 50th All-India Railway Tennis Championship at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association deco-turf courts on Thursday. Eastern Railway beat South Central Railway 2-0 to take the third place.

Results: Western beat Soouthern 2-0: Nitin Kirtane b Manoj Kumar 6-1, 6-0; Kedar Tembe b Rishi Sridhar 6-3, 6-2. Eastern b South Central 2-0: Vinod Kumar Sewa b Surendhara Naidu 6-0, 6-1; Siddhartha Verma b Md. Shafi 6-0, 6-0.

Live telecast of marathon

The Mumbai International Marathon, Asia’s largest marathon run, offering a prize money of $ 2,10,000, will be telecast live by Star Sports on Sunday, February 15, at 7 p m.

Twenty of the world’s elite male and female athletes will be vying for the title with an eye on the prize kitty that is on offer. The fastest male athlete will collect $ 25,000 while the fast female runner will pocket $ 12,000. The fastest Indian athlete, male or female, who clocks the best national time, will win a luxury car, in addition to cash prizes.

H W Bhatnagar takes charge as BHEL CMD

Mr Harsh Wardhan Bhatnagar, Director (IS and P) of engineering major Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) will also hold charge of Chairman and Managing Director of this Navratna PSU.

BHEL is the largest engineering and manufacturing enterprise of its kind in the country, besides being one of the leading players in the international power arena.

A Mechanical Engineering Graduate (1966) of University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee), Mr Bhatnagar joined BHEL in 1967 and rose to the position of Director, Industrial Systems and Products (IS and P) in October 2000.

Mr Bhatnagar has made significant contributions in various key functions, including domestic and international marketing, production, maintenance, management services etc.

Under his stewardship as Director (IS and P), BHEL’s industry sector achieved several significant milestones, including a quantum jump of over 45 per cent in order booking in the last three years, besides entering new business areas.

Earlier, as Executive Director of BHEL’s Haridwar complex, Mr Bhatnagar was instrumental in multiple growth in turnover and profit of the Haridwar Unit and its entry in overseas markets for large gas turbines, besides ISO 14001 Environmental Certification of BHEL, Haridwar, making it the first heavy engineering capital equipment manufacturing PSU.
