Gurpreet adjudged best athlete

Ludhiana, February 12
Gurpreet Kaur, a student of BA-I, was declared best athlete in the annual athletics meet of Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, here yesterday. Mr Harnam Dass Johar, Minister for Higher Education, Punjab, who was the chief guest inaugurated the meet and gave away prizes to winners.

Mr Johar exhorted the students to carve a niche for themselves in every field. He also shared his experiences of a recent tour to Pakistan where he had led a delegation of Punjabi writers to attend the World Punjabi Conference. The minister announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh for the college. Arjuna Award winner and former captain of the Indian hockey team, Ramandeep Singh Grewal, was among other dignitaries who attended the function.

Annual sports meet

MANDI AHMEDGARH: Annual sports meet of Guru Harkrishan Girls College, Phalewal, concluded on the college campus, yesterday. Mr Nirmal Singh, former chairman, Market Committee, presided over the closing ceremony.

Ms Saroj Sharma, Principal of the college, read out the annual sports report of the college for the past academic year.

Rupinder Kaur was declared best athlete of the meet. She won gold medals in 1500m, 400m, 200m and 100m races, javelin throw and high jump and shared first prize in three-legged race with Harpreet. Harpreet bagged second prizes in 400m, 200m and 100m races.

Amandeep bagged second prize in 1500m race and shared second prize with Sandeep in three-legged race. Slow-cycling race was won by Daljeet Kaur. Mumtaj and Harpreet stood second in javelin throw and high jump, respectively.

Sacred Heart athletics meet

Mandi Gobindgarh, February 12
Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Jalalpur, organised its annual athletics meet at the school playground here today. The meet was declared open by Mr Joginder Pal Singla, MC chief, who appreciated the achievements of the school.

Prizes were awarded to winners and students who represented the school at state or national-level events in various sports.

Allwin Francis, Ninnay Mahesh, Ramandeep Kaur (all of Class XI), and Manjinder Singh of Class IV got prizes for participation in a state skating meet. Prizes were also given to Hemant Bassi of Class XII and Ramneet Kaur of Class VII for participation in state basketball meet and Navdeep Kaur of Class XI for standing second in a state-level GK contest. Robin Singh of Class VII was awarded for representing Punjab in the Bharat Scouts and Guides meet.

Mr Mark Walker, first Secretary Education of the British Council, was the chief guest and lauded the achievements of the school both in the field of academics and sports. He complemented the school for successfully conducting the “Cambridge Young Learners English courses”. He awarded merit certificates issued by Cambridge University to students who had successfully completed various examinations of English conducted by the university. He invited the school faculty to participate in UK seminars and teacher training programmes. The British Council, he said, would provide all assistance to the school in the field of English teaching and exchange programmes. The managing director of the school, Mr J.P.S. Jolly, chairman, Mr Jose Kottaram, and Director/Principal, Wg Cdr R.D. Sharma, thanked the council and Mr Mark Walker for their assistance.

Annual sports meet

AMLOH: A three-day annual sports and cultural meet, organised by Desh Bhagat Ayurvedic College and Hospital, was inaugurated by Mr Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, MLA, Amloh, at Saunti village, 2 km from here, today. Dr Zora Singh welcomed the guests and participants.

The college Principal, Mr R.C. Jain, Mr Jagmeet Singh Sahota, vice-president Municipal Council, Mandi Gobindgarh, also addressed the gathering.

Competitions in 100m, 200m, 800m races, shot put, discus throw, badminton and table tennis (boys and girls) were organised. The finals and a cultural programme would be held on Saturday.

Akshay, Anil in badminton final

Ludhiana, February 12
Akshay Kumar defeated Jaskaran Singh and Anil Jaiswal outclassed Sachin Dua to settle for the title clash on the third day of the PAU Open Campus Badminton Tournament being held at the Prithipal Indoor Complex the Punjab Agricultural University here today. Akshay came out triumphant 15-5, 15-6, while Anil Jaiswal emerged winner, 15-5, 15-7.

In the women’s section, Ashwinder Kaur and Ramandeep Kaur won their semifinal encounters to advance into the final. Ashwinder defeated Ashima Bhutani, 11-5, 11-6, and Ramandeep Kaur edged out Jasjdeep Kaur, 11-4, 11-7.

Other results: Men’s doubles (semifinals): Vinay Madaan and Chetan Singla b Dr S.S. Mahal and Jagir Singh, 8-15, 15-7, 15-5; Akshay and Anil Jaiswal b Navdeep and Sachin Dua, 15-7, 15-9.

Athletics meet

DORAHA: The athletic meet of Guru Harkrishan Public School was inaugurated today by Mr Malwinder Singh Grewal, principal of the school, at Doraha.

The principal of the school in his inaugural speech asked students to participate in various athletic events and carve a niche for themselves.

Students participated in various events like shotput, long jump, high jump, slow cycling, sack race.

Dr Mrs Gursaran Kaur Sidhu was the chief guest. Mrs Raj Rani, President, Nagar Council, Doraha, Dr Harbans Sidhu, Dr Gurdeep Singh Sidhu, Mr Sukhpal Singh and Mr Arun Bector were among those who graced the occasion.

Volleyball tourney

KHANNA: A volleyball tournament was organised by Unique Sports Club Canada (Khanna) at AS Senior Secondary School Khanna today.

The tournament was inaugurated by Mr Sanjay Ghai and Mrs Harbans Kaur Dullo, MLA, Khanna, who was the chief guest.

Mr Rupinder Singh Gill, chairman of the club, Mr Harpreet Singh Ghuman, president and Mr Rajinder Singh Rauni, General Secretary of the club, were among those present.

8 pollution control board staff suspended

Ludhiana, February 12
The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has suspended eight officials of the board here for dereliction of duty.
Those suspended include an Executive Engineer, two Sub-Divisional Officers, clerks and a record keeper. XEN Kulwant Singh, SDO Gurmeet Singh, Mr Gurbakshish Gill, Mr Sukhbinder Singh, Mr Harnek Singh, Mr R.K. Bansal and Ms Balwinder Kaur are among the suspended.

The action comes following a raid of the local office by officials of the PPCB which revealed that the employees were sitting on files for the past many years.

The team comprising Mr Malwinder Singh, member-secretary, PPCB, XEN V.B. Handa and Senior Environment Engineer Babu Ram conducted the raid a week ago and found that suspended employees had not cleared some files for past many years. Besides checking files, the team had confiscated important documents.

Sources said other staff members of the board would soon be posted in the local office so that the work was not affected.
